DEM Study on the Segregation of a Non-Spherical Intruder in a Vibrated Granular Bed

The segregation process of a single large intruder in vibrated bed small particles has been widely studied, but most previous studies focused on spherical intruders. In this work, the discrete element method was used to study effects vibration conditions and shape dimensionless ascending velocity (va) intruder. prolate with aspect ratio varied its equivalent diameter fixed. Three diameters, namely volume-equivalent diameter, surface-area-equivalent Sauter were used. It found that va increases then decreases rise amplitude (Ad) frequency (fd), decrease sphericity (Φ). Moreover, porosity variation granular temperature analyzed, which can be linked change va. further uniformly correlated Ad·fd0.5, while critical response Ad fd occurs at Γ = 4.83, where is intensity. Based these findings, piecewise equation proposed predict as function Ad, fd, Φ.
