Denudation and geomorphic change in the Anthropocene; a global overview.

چکیده

The effects of human activity on geomorphic processes, particularly those related to denudation/sedimentation, are investigated by reviewing case studies and global assessments covering the past few centuries. Evidence we have assembled from different parts world, as well literature, show that certain processes experiencing an acceleration, especially since mid-twentieth century. This suggests a change is taking place, largely caused anthropogenic landscape changes. Direct human-driven denudation (through activities involving excavation, transport, accumulation geological materials) has increased factor 30 between 1950 2015, representing ten-fold increase per capita effect. plus indirectly human-induced (triggered land surface alteration) presently at least one order magnitude greater than due purely natural processes. slope movements, which represent important contribution denudation, sediment generation evolution, also shows clear intensification. Frequency hazardous events disasters movements (an indirect measure process frequency) in specific regions, continental levels, grown considerably, particular after Intense rainstorm often movement occurrence, but general increasing trend observed not satisfactorily explained climate. Sedimentation augmented considerably most regions all kinds sedimentation environments. Although link direct unequivocal, it safe assume if rates during given period, must too, even though their magnitudes could be different. augmentation, marked second half last century onwards, appears determined mainly changes, conjunction with climate change. changes suggest: a) there evidence scale growing response systems socio-economic drivers, being Gross Domestic Product density, good indicator potential cause such impacts; b) Land use/cover enhance denudation/sedimentation landslide/flood frequency, appear stronger controlling factor; c) Our findings point existence manifestation evident “great acceleration” began middle 20th century, constitutes characteristics proposed Anthropocene.

Geomorphic Controls on Andean Denudation Rates

To predict erosion rates throughout the Andes, we conducted a multiple regression analysis of the sediment discharge from 47 drainage basins in the Bolivian Andes and various topographic, climatologic, and geologic parameters. These mountainous basins are typically large (17–81,000 km; km), often have decades of measurement mean p 11,000 data on daily water and sediment discharge, and display a...

The anthropocene: from global change to planetary stewardship.

Over the past century, the total material wealth of humanity has been enhanced. However, in the twenty-first century, we face scarcity in critical resources, the degradation of ecosystem services, and the erosion of the planet's capability to absorb our wastes. Equity issues remain stubbornly difficult to solve. This situation is novel in its speed, its global scale and its threat to the resili...

Coastal Wetlands and Global Change: Overview

The potential impacts of climate change are of great practical concern to those interested in coastal wetland resources. Among the areas of greatest risk in the United States are low-lying coastal habitats with easily eroded substrates which occur along the northern Gulf of Mexico and southeast Atlantic coasts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the World Meteorological Or...

The contribution of mountains to global denudation

The hypothesis that mountains infl uence global climate through links among rock uplift, physical and chemical denudation, and the carbon cycle remains vigorously debated. We address the contribution of mountains to global denudation with an empirical model that predicts that >50% of the total denudation and 40% of the chemical denudation occur on the steepest ~10% of Earth’s terrestrial surfac...
