Desiccation time and rainfall control gaseous carbon fluxes in an intermittent stream

چکیده
Abstract Droughts are recognized to impact global biogeochemical cycles. However, the implication of desiccation on in-stream carbon (C) cycling is not well understood yet. We subjected sediments from a lowland, organic rich intermittent stream experimental over 9-week-period investigate temporal changes in microbial functional traits relation their redox requirements, dioxide (CO 2 ) and methane (CH 4 fluxes water-soluble (WSOC). Concurrently, implications rewetting by simulated short rainfalls (4 21 mm) gaseous C were tested. Early triggered dynamic CO CH with peak values 383 30 mg m −2 h −1 (mean ± SD), respectively, likely response enhanced aerobic mineralization accelerated evasion. At longer desiccation, dropped abruptly, because reduced abundance anaerobic traits. The ceased later, suggesting activity was constrained only extended time. found that rainfall boosted , which modulated size preceding Desiccation also amount WSOC proportion labile compounds leaching sediment. It remains questionable extent sediment pool influenced respiration processes, uptake cell lysis due drying-rewetting highlight severity dry period, controlled its duration presence precipitation events, needs detailed consideration estimate flow riverine fluxes.

15 صفحه اولHow temporal patterns in rainfall determine the geomorphology and carbon fluxes of tropical peatlands.
Tropical peatlands now emit hundreds of megatons of carbon dioxide per year because of human disruption of the feedbacks that link peat accumulation and groundwater hydrology. However, no quantitative theory has existed for how patterns of carbon storage and release accompanying growth and subsidence of tropical peatlands are affected by climate and disturbance. Using comprehensive data from a ...
متن کاملNonstationarity in Intermittent Rainfall: The ‘‘Dry Drift’’
A particular aspect of the nonstationary nature of intermittent rainfall is investigated. It manifests itself in the fact that the average rain rate varies with the distance to the surrounding dry areas. The authors call this fundamental link between the rainfall intensity and the rainfall occurrence process the ‘‘dry drift.’’ Using high-resolution radar rain-rate maps and disdrometer data, the...
متن کاملSeasonal carbon dynamics and water fluxes in an Amazon rainforest
Satellite-based observations indicate that seasonal patterns in canopy greenness and productivity in the Amazon are negatively correlated with precipitation, with increased greenness occurring during the dry months. Flux tower measurements indicate that the canopy greening that occurs during the dry season is associated with increases in net ecosystem productivity (NEP) and evapotranspiration (...
متن کاملImportance of Gaseous Elemental Mercury Fluxes in Western Maryland
The purpose of this study was to increase our understanding of the gaseous elemental mercury (GEM, Hg◦) fluxes between the atmosphere and soils. Moreover, we wanted to quantify the annual GEM flux, identify the controls, and compare the GEM flux to annual rates of gaseous oxidized mercury (GOM) dry deposition and wet deposition of total mercury. We measured GEM fluxes using the modified Bowen r...
