Design of thin micro-architectured panels with extension–bending coupling effects using topology optimization

We design the micro-architecture of thin elastic panels to control their macroscopic behavior, accounting simultaneously for in-plane stiffness, out-of-plane stiffness and extension–bending coupling effects. Our topology optimization method combines inverse homogenization, Hadamard shape derivative a level set in diffuse interface context systematically capture within unit cell optimal micro-architecture. The efficiency solution is illustrated through four numerical examples where designed yields an important coupling. deformation responses under tensile loading are assessed numerically both on complete periodic panel its homogenized twin plate. results demonstrate that simultaneous in-plane, coupled behavior enables shift flat into dome or saddle shaped structure. Moreover, obtained cells elementary blocks create directly 3D printable objects with shape-morphing capabilities.
