Designing With Information Feedbacks: Forecast Informed Reservoir Sizing and Operation

چکیده

The value of streamflow forecasts to inform water infrastructure operations has been extensively studied. Yet, their in informing design is still unexplored. In this work, we investigate how dam shaped by information feedbacks supporting the implementation flexible operating policies informed enable less costly reservoirs relative alternatives that do not rely on forecast information. Our approach initially explores maximum potential gain attainable searching and using most valuable lead time. We then analyze results? sensitivities existing synthetic biased forecasts. demonstrate our through an ex post analysis Kariba Dam Zambezi River Basin. Results show with perfect enables attaining same hydropower production dam, while reducing size associated capital costs 20%. A forecast-informed operation system can instead facilitate annual average increase 60 GWh production. This finding, extrapolated new planned dams basin, suggests could yield power benefits equal 75% current electricity consumption Zambian agricultural sector. use substantially reduces gain, showing ESP marginal designs are particularly vulnerable overestimation. Advancing may therefore become a asset for ongoing expansion basin.

Improving multi-objective reservoir operation optimization with sensitivity-informed dimension reduction

This study investigates the effectiveness of a sensitivity-informed method for multi-objective operation of reservoir systems, which uses global sensitivity analysis as a screening tool to reduce computational demands. Sobol’s method is used to screen insensitive decision variables and guide the formulation of the optimization problems with a significantly reduced number of decision variables. ...

Reservoir Operation During Droughts

Drought is an inevitable part of the world’s climate. It occurs in wet as well as in dry regions. Therefore, planning for drought and mitigating its impacts is essential. In this study, a hedging rule is developed using the zero/one mixed integer-programming approach. Furthermore, some procedures are introduced to ease the computational burden inherent in integer programming. Hedging rules are ...

Constructive Reservoir Computation with Output Feedbacks for Structured Domains

We introduce a novel constructive algorithm which progressively builds the architecture of GraphESN, which generalizes Reservoir Computing to learning in graph domains. Exploiting output feedback signals in a forward fashion in such construction, allows us to introduce supervision in the reservoir encoding process. The potentiality of the proposed approach is experimentally assessed on real-wor...

Reservoir Operation Modelling with Fuzzy Logic

In this article, a fuzzy rule based model is developed for the operation of a single purpose reservoir. The model operates on an ‘if – then’ principle, where the ‘if’ is a vector of fuzzy premises and the ‘then’ is a vector of fuzzy consequences. The steps involved in the development of the model include, construction of membership functions for the inflow, storage, demand and the release, form...
