Photosynthetic light reactions in chemically fixed spinach thylakoids.

After proper fixation with glutaraldehyde, spinach thylakoids retain both photosystem I and photosystem II activity. The photochemical activity of fixed thylakoids is highly resistant to 1% triton. This indicates that fixed thylakoids may be useful starting material for isolation of functional components which can be related to the original structure of the membrane.

Uncoupling of Spinach Thylakoids by Gramine

Gramine and related alkaloids isolated from fodder plants in the Gramineae, Leguminoseae and other plant families [1] are responsible for the toxicity observed in ruminants grazing on these plants [2, 3]. Recently, these alkaloids were reported as toxic to aphids feeding on graminaceous crops [4]. Toxicity of gramine has been related to the known physiological effects of tryptamine related comp...

Light Mediated Generation of Silver Nanoparticles by Spinach Thylakoids/Chloroplasts

The unique potential of chloroplasts/thylakoids to harness light energy to transport electrons from H2O to various entities was exploited for reduction of Ag+ to generate nanoparticles (NPs). Spinach thylakoids/chloroplasts turned AgNO3 solutions brown in light, but not in dark. Besides showing Ag-NPs specific surface plasmon resonance band, these brown solutions showed presence of 5-30 nm crys...

Cyclitols as cryoprotectants for spinach and chickpea thylakoids.

Thylakoid membranes isolated from either spinach or chickpea leaves were used as a model system for evaluating the capacity of cyclitols to act as cryoprotectants. The effect of freezing for 3 h at -18 degrees C on cyclic photophosphorylation and electron transport was measured. The cyclitols, ononitol, O-methyl-muco-inositol, pinitol, quebrachitol and quercitol at 50-150 mol m(-3) decreased me...

Uv-induced Oxygen Free Radicals Production in Spinach Thylakoids

Besides being the ultimate driving force for photosynthesis and its important regulatory factor, solar light is also a major source of stress to photosynthetic organisms. The efficiency of the light induced damage increases with the wavelength decrease. Thus, from natural sunlight that reaches the Earth, the UV-A and UV-B (290–320 nm and 320 – 400 nm, respectively) spectral ranges have the high...
