Development and validation of a new MODIS snow-cover-extent product over China

Abstract. Based on MOD09GA/MYD09GA surface reflectance data, a new MODIS snow-cover-extent (SCE) product from 2000 to 2020 over China has been produced by the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources (NIEER), Chinese Academy Sciences. The NIEER SCE contains two preliminary clear-sky datasets – Terra-MODIS Aqua-MODIS final daily cloud-gap-filled (CGF) dataset. first are generated mainly through optimizing snow-cover discriminating rules land-cover types, latter dataset is after series gap-filling processes such as aggregating datasets, reducing cloud gaps with adjacent information in space time, eliminating all auxiliary data. validation against 362 Meteorological Administration (CMA) stations shows that during snow seasons overall accuracy (OA) values three larger than 93 %, omission error (OE) constrained within 9 commission (CE) 10 %. Bias 0.98, 1.02, 1.03 demonstrate whole there no significant overestimation nor underestimation. same ground reference we found accuracies obviously higher standard products, especially for CGF SCE. For example, compared CE 23.78 % MYD10A1 shows, 6.78 %; OA up 93.15 versus 89.54 MOD10A1F 84.36 MYD10A1F product. Besides, expected, discrimination forest areas also improved significantly. An isolated at four CMA demonstrates increased 3–10 percentage points, OE dropped 1–8 4–21 points. Therefore, our virtually provided more reliable knowledge China; thereby, it can better serve hydrological, climatic, environmental, other related studies there.
