چکیده
Abstract Background Electrical pulse stimulations have been applied in brain for treating certain diseases such as movement disorders. High-frequency (HFS) of biphasic pulses used clinic stimulations, deep stimulation (DBS), to minimize the risk tissue damages caused by electrical stimulations. However, HFS sequences monophasic often animal experiments studying neuronal responses It is not clear yet what differences from are. Methods To investigate two types pulses, orthodromic-HFS (O-HFS) and antidromic-HFS (A-HFS) (1-min) were delivered bipolar electrodes, respectively, Schaffer collaterals (i.e., afferent fibers) alveus fibers efferent rat hippocampal CA1 region vivo. Evoked population spikes pyramidal neurons HFSs recorded region. In addition, single antidromic- orthodromic-test stimuli before after evaluate baseline recovery activity, respectively. Results Spreading depression (SD) appeared during 200-Hz O-HFS with a high incidence (4/5), but did appear corresponding (0/6). A preceding burst SD waveforms. Then, propagated slowly, silenced firing temporarily resulted partial orthodromically evoked (OPS) end O-HFS. No events lower frequency 100 Hz or (0/5 0/6, respectively), neither A-HFS (0/9). The antidromically (APS) recovered level within ~ 2 min. APS only partially pulses. Conclusions higher can induce abnormal neuron activity cause persisting attenuation excitability, indicating tissues. results provide guidance proper protocols experiments.

Role of adenosine receptors and protein phosphatases in the reversal of pentylenetetrazol-induced potentiation phenomenon by theta pulse stimulation in the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices
The effect of theta pulse stimulation (TPS) on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced long-term potentiation of population spikes (PS) was studied in the hippocampal CA1 in vitro. A transient PTZ application produced a long-lasting enhancement of PS amplitude. A 3-min episode of TPS delivered at a higher intensity produced complete reversal of the PTZ potentiation when delivered during the last minute...

متن کاملA prospective randomized evaluation of biphasic versus monophasic waveform pulses on defibrillation efficacy in humans.
Biphasic waveforms have been suggested as a superior waveform for ventricular defibrillation. To test this premise, a prospective randomized intraoperative evaluation of defibrillation efficacy of monophasic and biphasic waveform pulses was performed in 22 survivors of out of hospital ventricular fibrillation who were undergoing cardiac surgery for implantation of an automatic defibrillator. Th...
متن کاملThe effect of cysteamine on long-term potentiation and paired-pulse stimulation in the CA1 region of hippocampal slices in rat
The effect of cysteamine, a somatostatin depletor, on synaptic plasticity induced by tetanic and paired-pulse stimulation was investigated in rat hippocampal CA1. For this purpose, hippocampal slices from saline (1 ml/kg, s.c.) and cysteamine (200 fig/kg, s.c.)-treated and intact rats were used. Population spikes were recorded following Schaffer collateral stimulation. To induce LTP, primed bur...
متن کاملResuscitation after prolonged ventricular fibrillation with use of monophasic and biphasic waveform pulses for external defibrillation.
BACKGROUND Survival after prolonged ventricular fibrillation (VF) appears severely limited by 2 major factors: (1) low defibrillation success rates and (2) persistent post-countershock myocardial dysfunction. Biphasic (BP) waveforms may prove capable of favorably modifying these limitations. However, they have not been rigorously tested against monophasic (MP) waveforms in clinical models of ex...
