Direct measurement of the direction-dependent mechanical behaviour of skeletal muscle extracellular matrix

This paper reports the first comprehensive data set on anisotropic mechanical properties of isolated endo- and perimysial extracellular matrix skeletal muscle, presents corresponding protocols for preparing testing samples. In particular, decellularisation porcine muscle is achieved with caustic soda solution, parameters are defined based compressive tensile in order to identify optimal treatment time such that fibres dissolved whereas remains largely intact mechanically functional. At around 18 h, a window was found confirmed by histology, which axial experiments were performed characterise direction-dependent response samples, effect lateral pre-compression studied. The typical, large variability experimental stress could be reduced varying single scalar factor, attributed variation fraction within tissue. While results tissue increasingly available literature, there lack information collagenous components muscle. present work aims at closing this gap thus contributes an improved understanding mechanics provides missing piece development constitutive computational models.
