Direct Oxygen Removal from Titanium by Utilizing Vapor of Rare Earth Metals

To promote the recycling of Ti scrap, it is essential to develop new technologies that can efficiently remove oxygen impurities from scrap. However, direct removal dissolved in solid extremely difficult, and currently, there are no effective deoxidation methods be used industrially. In this study, we experimentally verified a technique for using vapor rare earth metals with high pressures, such as Sm, Eu, Tm, Yb. It was confirmed Eu did not decrease concentration samples below 1000 mass ppm. On other hand, shown Yb decreased through their oxide formation reactions. particular, demonstrated Tm deoxidize at or sponge produced by Kroll process (∼500 ppm O).
