Disfluencies Revisited—Are They Speaker-Specific?

چکیده
The forensic application of phonetics relies on individuality in speech. In the domain, individual patterns verbal and paraverbal behavior are interest which readily available, measurable, consistent, robust to disguise telephone transmission. Prelexical adjustments to speaker idiosyncrasies: are they position-specific?
Listeners use lexical knowledge to adjust their prelexical representations of speech sounds in response to the idiosyncratic pronunciations of particular speakers. We used an exposure-test paradigm to investigate whether this type of perceptual learning transfers across syllabic positions. No significant learning effect was found in Experiment 1, where exposure sounds were onsets and test sound...
متن کاملDisfluencies in writing - are they like in speaking?
This paper presents a study of disfluencies in written language production. Texts from ten university students are compared to data from people who almost never use writing, namely adult dyslexics and to texts from people who communicate in writing under real-time constraints every day, namely deaf whose main use of writing is text telephone conversations. This paper investigates which types of...
متن کاملSpeaker Verification Using Speaker-Specific Prompts
Intraand inter-speaker information, which include acoustical, speaker style, speech rate and temporal variation, despite their critical importance for the verification of claims, still have not been captured effectively. As a result of such modeling deficiency, existing speaker verification systems generally test claimed utterances with interfacing procedures that are common to all speakers. In...
متن کاملHow can you use disfluencies and still sound as a good speaker?
This paper explores the results of a previous experiment concerning listeners’ ratings of different types of (dis)fluencies and extends the analysis of such phenomena to a corpus of university lectures. Results suggest that, although not all disfluency types are equally tolerated by listeners, such differences may be overridden by an adequate control of tonal scaling and pause length, at least.
متن کاملI Forget What That's Called! Children's Online Processing of Disfluencies Depends on Speaker Knowledge.
Speech disfluencies can convey information to listeners: Adults and children predict that filled pauses (e.g., uhh) will be followed by referents that are difficult to describe or are new to the discourse. In adults, this is driven partly by an understanding that disfluencies reflect processing difficulties. This experiment examined whether 3½-year-olds' use of disfluencies similarly involves i...
