Does feeding type matter? Contribution of organic matter sources to benthic invertebrates on the Arctic Chukchi Sea shelf
نویسندگان
چکیده
Benthic communities play an important role in the nutrient cycling of settling organic matter and provide energy link to higher trophic levels. These benthic are highly dependent on food sources provided through sinking material, with pelagic-benthic coupling particularly strong Arctic shelf systems. shelves, however, experiencing shifts timing sea ice breakup that can have severe implications amount composition from different primary production supplied benthos. The invertebrates processing is typically classified by feeding types. goal this study was evaluate if invertebrate types a useful concept for understanding how various biosynthetic used across Chukchi Sea. We employed essential amino acid (EAA) specific stable isotope fingerprinting identify proportional contributions three EAA (from bacterial, phytoplankton, terrestrial production) as proxy carbon diets consumers. When grouped types, were similar among suspension, deposit feeders predators/scavengers. Different genera within same type, showed significant differences sources, indicating use genus-specific rather than type-specific. discuss characteristics other mode could account use, including mobility, selectivity available sediments, aspects such assimilation efficiency. additional considerations when grouping organisms High proportions found majority all study, reflecting high source sediments confirming being consumers Arctic. Sea had only weak correlations environmental variables. While distinctly uses benthic-feeding but not may represent plasticity invertebrates, expected climate change-driven supply benthos still flow web, pathways support current top predators.

متن کاملDoes organization type matter
Does organization type matter? The comparative performance of different types of organization has attracted substantial scholarly attention. A large literature shows that performance varies across types of organization: private firms generally outperform government-owned firms (e.g., Megginson and Netter, 2001), but comparisons between these types of organization and nonprofit organizations are...
متن کاملOrganic Carbon and Organic Matter Levels in Sediments of the Strait of Hormoz, the Persian Gulf
Total organic carbon has a major influence on both the chemical and biological processesthat take place in sediments. Algal bloom is one of the organic carbon levels in aquatic ecosystems. In 2009 algal bloom occurred in the Hormozgan province and prolonged for months, which finally setteled down in 2010. In this study the variations of total organic carbon (TOC), organic matter (TOM) and tot...
