چکیده
Probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) has been widely applied to amplified coherent optical transmissions owing its gain over the uniform signaling and fine-granularity rate adaptation underlying fiber channel condition. These merits stimulate study of PCS for short-reach applications dominated by intensity modulation (IM) - direct detection (DD) systems. As commercial IM-DD systems typically do not employ amplification save cost power consumption, they are no longer subject an average constraint (APC) but a peak (PPC), which poses unique challenges take full advantages PCS. This paper provides comprehensive investigation in without amplifiers. In particular, we reveal when transmitter enhances peak-to-average ratio signal, PPC system can be partially or even fully converted APC classical offers merits. The findings verified through experiment using 4- 8-ary pulse amplitude modulations.

A novel power-efficient scheme asymmetrically and symmetrically clipping optical (ASCO)-OFDM for IM/DD optical systems
In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) optical systems. By using this novel scheme of an OFDM optical system, not only odd subcarriers but also even subcarriers can be modulated to transmit a clipping optical signal. A conventional asymmetrically clipping optical (ACO)-OFDM is applied to mod...
متن کاملPAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems Using Constellation Shaping
This work considers the problem of Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR) reduction in an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing system. We design a cubic constellation, called Hadamard constellation, whose boundary is along the bases defined by the Hadamard matrix in the transform domain and then we further reduce the PAPR by applying the Selective Mapping technique. The encoding algorithm is ...
متن کاملFiber optical parametric amplifiers in optical communication systems
The prospects for using fiber optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) in optical communication systems are reviewed. Phase-insensitive amplifiers (PIAs) and phase-sensitive amplifiers (PSAs) are considered. Low-penalty amplification at/or near 1 Tb/s has been achieved, for both wavelength- and time-division multiplexed formats. High-quality mid-span spectral inversion has been demonstrated at 0.64...
متن کاملAdaptively loaded IM/DD optical OFDM based on set-partitioned QAM formats.
We investigate the constellation design and symbol error rate (SER) of set-partitioned (SP) quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats. Based on the SER analysis, we derive the adaptive bit and power loading algorithm for SP QAM based intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM/DD) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). We experimentally show that the proposed system significantly ...
متن کاملPerformance Limitations of an Optical IM-DD Transmission System Due to Polarization Mode Dispersion
An analytical approach is presented to evaluate the impact of polarization mode dispersion on the average bit error rate (BER) performance of a intensity modulated direct detection (IM-DD) optical transmission system considering Maxwellian distribution for the differential group delay (DGD). The results show that the performance of an IM-DD system suffers power penalty of 0.27 dB, 0.45 dB and 2...
