Drought variability and land degradation in the Amazon River basin

چکیده

The Amazon River Basin (ARB) plays an essential role in global climate regulation. Recent studies have revealed signs of increasing drought conditions different parts the basin. Although human activities degraded large areas, little work has been done to assess whether prolonged may exacerbate land degradation. Among methods for monitoring degradation, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 15.3.1 adopted by United Nations Convention Combat Desertification (UNCCD) allows a comprehensive assessment impacts degradation due its multi-factor nature and scalability. aims this study are twofold: 1) status using SDG from 2001 2020 basin; 2) explore relationship between detectability UNCCD approach long-term severity. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Precipitation-Evapotranspiration (SPEI), self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity (scPDSI) were used as indices. results 757,704 km 2 (12.67% basin) land, which was reflected downward trend productivity dynamics followed combined productivity, Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) cover largest hotspot identified along southwestern boundary Basin. Furthermore, there strong evidence that detection through is sensitive drought, particularly when applied rainfed croplands.

Spatial and temporal soil moisture and drought variability in the Upper Colorado River Basin

This research investigates the interannual variability of soil moisture as related to large-scale climate variability and also evaluates the spatial and temporal variability of modeled deep layer (40–140 cm) soil moisture in the Upper Colorado River Basin (UCRB). A three layers hydrological model VIC-3L (Variable Infiltration Capacity Model – 3 layers) was used to generate soil moisture in the ...

Artisanal fisheries of the Xingu River basin in Brazilian Amazon.

The present study characterises the commercial fisheries of the basin of the Xingu River, a major tributary of the Amazon River, between the towns of Gurupá (at the mouth of the Amazon) and São Félix do Xingu. Between April, 2012, and March, 2014, a total of 23,939 fishing trips were recorded, yielding a total production of 1,484 tons of fish, harvested by almost three thousand fishers. The ana...

2005 drought event in the Amazon River basin as measured by GRACE and estimated by climate models

[1] Satellite gravity measurements from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) provide new quantitative measures of the 2005 extreme drought event in the Amazon river basin, regarded as the worst in over a century. GRACE measures a significant decrease in terrestrial water storage (TWS) in the central Amazon basin in the summer of 2005, relative to the average of the 5 other summer...

Land Use and Land Cover Changes in a Tropical River Basin: A Case from Bharathapuzha River Basin, Southern India

A study of the spatial and temporal changes in land use and land cover (LULC) was conducted using Remote Sensing and GIS. We analyzed the LULC of Bharathapuzha river basin, south India using multispectral LANDSAT imageries of 1973-2005 time periods. 31% depletion in the natural vegetation cover and 8.7% depletion in wetland agriculture area were seen in the basin during the period. On the other...
