چکیده
Abstract The Apulian region (south-east of Italy) is characterized by the presence old underground cavities used for extraction soft calcarenite rocks and then abandoned over time. assessment stability these caves represents a challenging problem, especially areas possible interaction with overlying structures infrastructures. role environmental factors in triggering disruption processes cave has been extensively studied literature, but instability effect related to dynamic loads often underestimated. Consequently, purpose present work propose some advancements this field evaluating effects loads, consistent regional seismicity, on cavities. A large number two-dimensional parametric finite element analyses carried out ideal cases single rectangular study allowed detect appreciable caused input, depending cavity width, thickness roof, energy content input. between twin under conditions also from numerical point view. results show that plastic failure septum reached earlier than static it again dependent width roof thickness. Lastly, procedure calculate factor safety against either shear or tensile mechanisms proposed, which allows quantify change conditions.

Estimating Limits for the Geothermal Energy Potential of Abandoned Underground Coal Mines: A Simple Methodology
Flooded mine workings have good potential as low-enthalpy geothermal resources, which could be used for heating and cooling purposes, thus making use of the mines long after mining activity itself ceases. It would be useful to estimate the scale of the geothermal potential represented by abandoned and flooded underground mines in Europe. From a few practical considerations, a procedure has been...
متن کاملDynamic recrystallization during deformation of polycrystalline ice: insights from numerical simulations.
The flow of glaciers and polar ice sheets is controlled by the highly anisotropic rheology of ice crystals that have hexagonal symmetry (ice lh). To improve our knowledge of ice sheet dynamics, it is necessary to understand how dynamic recrystallization (DRX) controls ice microstructures and rheology at different boundary conditions that range from pure shear flattening at the top to simple she...
متن کاملAbandoned Uranium Mines Project Atlas Project Overview
The Navajo Nation is located on the Colorado Plateau and encompasses over 25,000 square miles across Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The distinctive physiography of this region has resulted in a major mining area for uranium. The Navajo Nation includes intensely dissected rocky regions and has elevations that range from about 3,000 feet to slightly over 10,000 feet. The region is known for a wid...
متن کاملOrigins of barchan dune asymmetry: Insights from numerical simulations
Barchan dunes — crescent-shaped dunes that form in areas of unidirectional winds and low sand availability — commonly display an asymmetric shape, with one limb extended downwind. Several factors have been identified as potential causes for barchan dune asymmetry on Earth and Mars: asymmetric bimodal wind regime, topography, influx asymmetry and dune collision. However, the dynamics and potenti...
متن کاملGas Drainage Improvement in Underground Coal Mines
Effective gas management is vital to the success of the longwall mining in the Bulli seam, in the Southern Coalfield, Sydney Basin, NSW, Australia. The evolution of gas drainage methods and practices are discussed with respect to gas type, gas drainage lead time and prevailing geological conditions. Both underground to inseam drilling and surface to inseam drilling techniques are described at b...
