Dynamic crack growth along heterogeneous planar interfaces: Interaction with unidimensional strips

چکیده
We examine theoretically and numerically fast propagation of a tensile crack along unidimensional strips with periodically evolving toughness. In such dynamic fracture regimes, front waves form transport disturbances the edge at speed less than Rayleigh wave depending on speed. this configuration, standing dictate spatiotemporal evolution local speed, which takes specific scaling form. Analytical examination both short-time long-time limits problem reveals parameter dependency strip wavelength, toughness contrast overall Implications generalization to arbitrary shape are lastly discussed.

Fast crack growth along interfaces
Analyses of dynamic crack growth along interfaces are discussed. The material on each side of the bond line is characterized by an elastic constitutive relation. A cohesive surface constitutive relation that allows for the creation of new free surface is also specified across the bond line. The resistance to crack initiation and the crack speed history are then predicted without invoking any ad...
متن کاملCrack front pinning by design in planar heterogeneous interfaces
The propagation of an interfacial crack front along the weak plane of a thin film stack is considered. A simple patterning technique is used to create a toughness contrast within this perfectly two-dimensional weak interface. The transparency of the specimens allows us to directly observe the propagation of the purely planar crack obtained during a DCB (Double Cleavage Beam) test. The effect on...

-The Rice-Thomson model is used to predict the directional toughness of a copper/sapphire interface, consisting of a {221 } face of a copper crystal bonded to a basal sapphire surface. Specimens of this type are subsequently tested, in the form of a layered beam (having two opposing cracking directions) subject to four-point bending and confirm the theoretical predictions. A general observation...

-The isochromatic fringe patterns surrounding an intersonically propagating interface crack are developed and characterized using the recently developed stress field equations. A parametric investigation is conducted to study the influence of various parameters such as the crack-tip velocity and the contact coefficient on the isochromatic fringe patterns. It has been observed that the crack-tip...
متن کاملInteraction of Dynamic Cracks with Inclined Interfaces
Catastrophic failure of any brittle structure under dynamic loading consists of dynamic crack initiation, propagation, curving, branching (both micro and macro) and branching instability. However, the failure is much more complex in case of layered materials which has interfaces. In these materials, other than above crack mechanisms the crack can also deflect to propagate along the interface or...
