چکیده
Abstract The aim of this study is to understand the strength behaviour and fragment size rocks during indirect, quasi-static dynamic tensile tests. Four with different lithological characteristics, namely: basalt, granite, sandstone, marble were selected for study. Brazilian disc experiments performed over a range strain rates from ~ 10 –5 /s 2.7 × 1 using hydraulic loading frame split Hopkinson bar. Over rates, our measurements increase are in good agreement universal theoretical scaling relationship (Kimberley et al., Acta Mater 61:3509–3521, 2013). Dynamic fragmentation tension mode failure has received little attention, present study, we determine distribution based on experimentally fragmented specimens. fragments fall into two distinct groups nature failure: coarser primary fragments, finer secondary fragments. degree assessed terms characteristic rate compared existing models. average strong dependency entire testing range, while less sensitive at lower rates. Marble sandstone found generate more pulverised debris when basalt granite. Furthermore, mean sizes well described by power-law function rate.

Dynamic Strenth Measurements on Granite and Basalt
Small samples of rock, like those used in laboratory collision experiments, are known to be much stronger than bodies that are meters to hundreds of meters in size [1]. Specifically, the impactor energy per unit target mass needed to shatter the target decreases dramatically with increasing target size. This occurs because the strength of rock, like many other geological materials, depends stro...

15 صفحه اولTensile Strength of Carbon Nanotubes under Realistic Temperature and Strain Rate
Strain rate and temperature dependence of the tensile strength of single-wall carbon nanotubes has been investigated with molecular dynamics simulations. The tensile failure or yield strain is found to be strongly dependent on the temperature and strain rate. A transition state theory based predictive model is developed for the tensile failure of nanotubes. Based on the parameters fitted from h...
متن کاملFinite Element Modeling of Strain Rate and Grain Size Dependency in Nanocrystalline Materials
Nanocrystalline materials show a higher strain-rate sensitivity in contrast to the conventional coarse-grained materials and a different grain size dependency. To explain these phenomenon, a finite element model is constructed that considers both grain interior and grain boundary deformation of nanocrystalline materials. The model consist of several crystalline cores with different orientations...
متن کاملNoble Gas Release and Flow Through a Granite and Basalt
An experimental system we developed combines triaxial rock deformation and mass spectrometry to measure noble gas flow before, during, and after rock fracture. Gas flow through a granite and basalt in its unfractured condition allows estimation of “native” permeability. Geogenic noble gas is released during triaxial deformation (real time) and is related to volume strain and acoustic emissions....
