Dynamical friction in gravitational atoms

چکیده
Abstract Due to superradiant instabilities, clouds of ultralight bosons can spontaneously grow around rotating black holes, creating so-called “gravitational atoms”. In this work, we study their dynamical effects on binary systems. We first focus open orbits, showing that the presence a cloud increase cross section for capture compact object by more than an order magnitude. then consider closed orbits and demonstrate backreaction cloud's ionization orbital motion should be identified as friction. Finally, time eccentric inclined orbits. find that, while quickly circularizes binary, it barely affects inclination angle. These results enable realistic description dynamics gravitational atoms in binaries pave way dedicated searches with future wave detectors.

Numerical tests of dynamical friction in gravitational inhomogeneous systems
In this paper, I test by numerical simulations the results of Del Popolo & Gambera (1998), dealing with the extension of Chandrasekhar and von Neumann’s analysis of the statistics of the gravitational field to systems in which particles (e.g. stars, galaxies) are inhomogeneously distributed. The paper is an extension of that of Ahmad & Cohen (1974), in which the authors tested some results of t...
متن کاملDynamical friction in dwarf galaxies
We present a simplified analytic approach to the problem of the spiraling of a massive body orbiting within the dark halo of a dwarf galaxy. This dark halo is treated as the core region of a King distribution of dark matter particles, in consistency with the observational result of dwarf galaxies having solid body rotation curves. Thus we derive a simple formula which provides a reliable and ge...

متن کاملFriction forces on atoms after acceleration.
The aim of this paper is to revisit the calculation of atom-surface quantum friction in the quantum field theory formulation put forward by Barton (2010 New J. Phys. 12 113045). We show that the power dissipated into field excitations and the associated friction force depend on how the atom is boosted from being initially at rest to a configuration in which it is moving at constant velocity (v)...
متن کاملNonlinear Dynamical Friction in a Gaseous Medium
Using high-resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we investigate nonlinear gravitational responses of gas to, and the resulting drag force on, a very massive perturber Mp moving at velocity Vp through a uniform gaseous medium of adiabatic sound speed a∞. We model the perturber as a Plummer potential with softening radius rs, and run various models with differing A = GMp/(a 2 ∞rs)...
