Earthquake Magnitude With DAS: A Transferable Data‐Based Scaling Relation

چکیده
Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a promising technique to improve the rapid detection and characterization of earthquakes. Previous DAS studies mainly focus on phase information but less amplitude information. In this study, we compile earthquake data from two arrays in California, USA, one submarine array Sanriku, Japan. We develop data-driven method obtain first scaling relation between magnitude. Our results reveal that amplitudes recorded by different regions follow similar relation. The can provide magnitude estimation effectively avoid uncertainties caused conversion ground motions. show appears transferable new with calibrations. highlights great potential source early warning.

Scaling of seismic memory with earthquake size.
It has been observed that discrete earthquake events possess memory, i.e., that events occurring in a particular location are dependent on the history of that location. We conduct an analysis to see whether continuous real-time data also display a similar memory and, if so, whether such autocorrelations depend on the size of earthquakes within close spatiotemporal proximity. We analyze the seis...
متن کاملMagnitude Scaling of Induced Earthquakes
Presented are the results of an earthquake magnitude homogenization exercise for several datasets of induced earthquakes. The result of this exercise is to show that homogeneous computation of earthquake momentand local-magnitude is useful in hazard assessment of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGSs). Data include records from EGSs in Basel (Switzerland), Soultz (France) and Cooper Basin (Australi...
متن کاملEstimation of the Maximum Earthquake Magnitude, mmax
This paper provides a generic equation for the evaluation of the maximum earthquake magnitude mmax for a given seismogenic zone or entire region. The equation is capable of generating solutions in different forms, depending on the assumptions of the statistical distribution model and/or the available information regarding past seismicity. It includes the cases (i) when earthquake magnitudes are...
متن کاملScaling of earthquake fault parameters
The long-standing conflict between the predictions of elastic dislocation models and the observation that average coseismic slip increases with rupture length is resolved with application of a simple displacement-depth function and assumption that the base of the seismogenic zone does not result from the onset of viscous relaxation, but rather a transition to stable sliding in a medium that rem...
متن کاملA probabilistic neural network for earthquake magnitude prediction
A probabilistic neural network (PNN) is presented for predicting the magnitude of the largest earthquake in a pre-defined future time period in a seismic region using eight mathematically computed parameters known as seismicity indicators. The indicators considered are the time elapsed during a particular number (n) of significant seismic events before the month in question, the slope of the Gu...
