چکیده

Ice adhesion to superhydrophobic surfaces is most of the time studied regarding their wetting properties, in attempts predict best candidates promote low ice adhesion. However, no clear correlation between water repellency and has yet been defined, thus limiting development empirical testing. The present study puts forward a mechanical based approach (usually used for bonded joints) rationalize role surface structure on Experimental observations single microtextured substrate form basis fracture toughness analysis. Compared smooth aluminum substrate, shear measurements show that increased by 30% when penetrated microgrooves (Wenzel ice) or decreases 36% air remained trapped beneath (Cassie ice). Post-mortem were performed using replica technique. Formulas derived compute interfacial Cassie Wenzel ice, depending geometry microtexture. was then as an input parameter into finite element model comprising cohesive zone layer interface. This semi-analytical gave values good agreement with experimental results, showing relevance

Fully reversible transition from Wenzel to Cassie-Baxter states on corrugated superhydrophobic surfaces.

Liquid drops on textured surfaces show different dynamical behaviors depending on their wetting states. They are extremely mobile when they are supported by composite solid-liquid-air interfaces (Cassie-Baxter state) and immobile when they fully wet the textured surfaces (Wenzel state). By reversibly switching between these two states, it will be possible to achieve control over the fluid dynam...

Electrical switching of wetting states on superhydrophobic surfaces: a route towards reversible Cassie-to-Wenzel transitions.

We demonstrate that the equilibrium shape of the composite interface between superhydrophobic surfaces and drops in the superhydrophobic Cassie state under electrowetting is determined by the balance of the Maxwell stress and the Laplace pressure. Energy barriers due to pinning of contact lines at the edges of the hydrophobic pillars control the transition from the Cassie to the Wenzel state. B...

How Wenzel and cassie were wrong.

We argue using experimental data that contact lines and not contact areas are important in determining wettability. Three types of two-component surfaces were prepared that contain "spots" in a surrounding field: a hydrophilic spot in a hydrophobic field, a rough spot in a smooth field, and a smooth spot in a rough field. Water contact angles were measured within the spots and with the spot con...

Modified Wenzel and Cassie Equations for Wetting on Rough Surfaces

We study a stationary wetting problem on rough and inhomogeneous solid surfaces. We derive a new formula for the apparent contact angle by asymptotic two-scale homogenization method. The formula is reduced to a modified Wenzel equation for geometrically rough surfaces and a modified Cassie equation for chemically inhomogeneous surfaces. Unlike the classical Wenzel and Cassie equations, the modi...
