Effect of Sawing Variation on Hardwood Lumber Recovery—Part I: Volume

چکیده
Abstract Sawing variation (SV), the degree of deviation from a specified target lumber size, is an unavoidable component sawing process. SV influenced by several factors such as machine, material, set works, feed and cutting parameters. To account for these resulting in deviations desired thickness cut must be increased that only minimal number boards less than thickness. Thus, greater amount SV, larger quantity undersized produced. Hence, with amounts come waste decreased opportunities optimizing recovery. However, decrease material loss due to reduction may not necessarily translate into statistically significant increase product recovery volume. This study explored effect varying degrees on volume range hardwood log diameters using US Forest Service's LOg ReCovery Analysis Tool sawmill simulation software. A average improvement 3 percent reduced was observed across all kerf thicknesses, equating production value $336,000 8 million board feet mill. Results indicate gains realized depend upon sawn, thickness, change (reduction) SV.

The effect of curve sawing two-sided cants from small-diameter hardwood sawlogs on lumber and pallet part yields
Curve sawing is a primary log breakdown process that incorporates gang-saw technology to allow two-sided cants from logs with sweep to be cut parallel to the log surface or log axis. Since curve-sawn logs with sweep are cut along the grain, the potential for producing high quality straight-grain lumber and cants increases, and strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability are maximized. Presen...
متن کاملSimulation of Hardwood Log Sawing
Preface Abstract Mathematical modeling computer programs for several hardwood sawing systems have been developed and are described. One has judgment capabilities. Several of the subroutines are common to all of the models. These models are the basis for further research which examines the question of best-grade sawing method in terms of lumber value yield. This Research Paper is one in a series...
متن کاملRelative kerf and sawing variation values for some hardwood sawing machines
Information on the conversion efficiency of sawing machines is important to those involved in the management, maintenance, and design of sawmills. Little information on the conversion characteristics of hardwood sawing machines has been available. This study, based on 266 studies of 6 machine types, provides an analysis of the machine characteristics of kerf width, within-board, between-board, ...
متن کاملEffect of Curve Sawing on Lumber Recovery and Warp of Short Cherry Logs Containing Sweep
—It has been estimated that approximately one-third of hardwood sawlogs have a significant amount of sweep and that 7 to nearly 40 percent of the yield is lost from logs that have greater than 1 inch of sweep. While decreased yield is important, for hardwood logs the loss of lumber value is likely more significant. A method that produced lumber while accounting for log curvature (sweep) would a...
متن کاملHardwood Lumber Scanning Tests to Determine NHLA Lumber Grades
This paper concerns the scanning, and grading of kiln-dried hardwood lumber. A prototype system is described that uses laser sources and a video camera to scan boards. The system automatically detects defects and wane, grades the boards, and then searches for higher value boards within the original board. The goal is to derive maximum commercial value based on current market lumber prices. This...
