Effectiveness of a dual solenoid magnetic shield at reducing x-ray-like background in silicon-based x-ray detectors

Both active and passive magnetic shielding have been used extensively during past current X-ray astronomy missions to shield detectors from soft protons electrons entering through telescope optics. However, simulations performed throughout the decade discovered that a significant proportion of X-ray-like background originates secondary produced in spacecraft surrounding detectors, which hit isotropically all directions. Here, results Geant4 simple Helmholtz coil-like field detector are presented, it is found extremely effective at preventing reaching detector. This method could remove almost associated with both backscattering fully absorbed electrons, together expected account for approximately two thirds off-axis silicon-based several hundred microns thickness. The structure necessary doing this easily be using set solenoids or neodymium magnets providing power requirements can sufficiently optimised fluorescence lines attenuated, respectively.
