Effects of dilute low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) solutions in immiscible radial viscous fingering instabilities

چکیده
We experimentally study the effects of normal stress differences in immiscible radial viscous fingering instability a Hele–Shaw cell. Dilute low molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions are used as displaced fluid to focus on elastic without shear-thinning behavior. The PEO is varied investigate differences. experimental observations reveal that nonmonotonic and opposing evident depending stage evolution. Decreases reduce number fingers widen finger width early stage. However, increase promotes tip splitting narrows but suppresses intermediate Weissenberg numbers estimated at different stages instabilities. Tip occurs highest covered this suppression observed numbers. At numbers, we observe an increased reduced fingers.

Viscous and elastic fingering instabilities in foam.
We investigate pattern formation in the immiscible displacement of foam from a confining geometry. The dominant length scales with the driving pressure gradient as for a Newtonian fluid, but depends surprisingly on the ratio of plate separation to bubble diameter. The pattern morphology exhibits a transition from a jagged, presumably elastic, character to a smooth, viscous character as the shea...
متن کاملViscous Fingering in Miscible, Immiscible and Reactive Fluids
With the Lattice Boltzmann method (using the BGK approximation) we investigate the dynamics of Hele-Shaw flow under conditions corresponding to various experimental systems. We discuss the onset of the instability (dispersion relation), the static properties (characterization of the interface) and the dynamic properties (growth of the mixing zone) of simulated Hele-Shaw systems. We examine the ...
متن کاملInterface evolution during radial miscible viscous fingering.
We study experimentally the miscible radial displacement of a more viscous fluid by a less viscous one in a horizontal Hele-Shaw cell. For the range of tested injection rates and viscosity ratios we observe two regimes for the evolution of the fluid-fluid interface. At early times the interface length increases linearly with time, which is typical of the Saffman-Taylor instability for this radi...
متن کاملSystematic weakly nonlinear analysis of radial viscous fingering.
We present a weakly nonlinear analysis of the interface dynamics in a radial Hele-Shaw cell driven by both injection and rotation. We extend the systematic expansion introduced in [E. Alvarez-Lacalle et al., Phys. Rev. E 64, 016302 (2001)] to the radial geometry, and compute explicitly the first nonlinear contributions. We also find the necessary and sufficient condition for the uniform converg...
متن کاملFractal dimension and unscreened angles measured for radial viscous fingering.
We have examined fractal patterns formed by the injection of air into oil in a thin (0.127 mm) layer contained between two cylindrical glass plates of 288 mm diameter (a Hele-Shaw cell), for pressure differences in the range 0.25 < or = DeltaP < or = 1.75 atm. We find that an asymptotic structure is reached at large values of the ratio r/b, where r is the pattern radius and b the gap between th...
