Effects of host plant growth form on dropping behaviour in leaf beetles

چکیده
Abstract Many leaf-eating insects drop from their host plants to escape predators. However, they must return the leaves of plant after dropping, which represents a cost associated with this behaviour. In woody plants, positioning is generally higher than that herbaceous suggests dropping might be costlier for plants. Therefore, we predicted behaviour would observed less frequently in feed on those leaves. To test prediction, investigated experimentally larvae (23 species) and adults (112 leaf beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) (86 species 44 families) field conditions. Larvae exhibited pattern was not detected adults. Thus, growth form affect evolution beetle larvae, but winged adults, perhaps owing mobility.

The evolution of larval foraging behaviour in response to host plant variation in a leaf beetle
The evolutionary causes of variation in host specialization among phytophagous insects are still not well understood and identifying them is a central task in insect /host plant biology. Here we examine host utilization of the chrysomelid beetle Oreina elongata that shows interpopulation variation in the degree of specialization. We focus on larval behaviour and on what selection pressures may ...
متن کاملthe effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends
flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...
Tri-trophic effects of plant defenses: chickadees consume caterpillars based on host leaf chemistry
Few studies have addressed how plant chemical defenses that directly affect herbivores in turn affect consumption patterns of vertebrates at higher trophic levels. We studied how variable foliar chemistry of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) affects the diet preferences of an avian insectivore feeding on an introduced herbivore, the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.). Black-capped chic...
متن کاملEffects of seed beetles on the performance of desert legumes depend on host species, plant stage, and beetle density
Seeds of many arid habitat plants have a water-impermeable coat and can germinate only after being scarified. Bruchine seed beetles are important parasites of legume seeds in these environments, but their effect on germination can be unpredictable. Beetles deplete seed resources and can kill the embryo but also scarify seeds. We investigated the effects of a generalist parasite, Stator limbatus...
