Effects of urban atmospheric particulate matter on higher plants using Lycopersicon esculentum as model species

چکیده
Abstract Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is one of the major environmental concerns in Europe. A wide range studies has proved ecotoxic potential atmospheric particles. PM exerts chemical stress on vegetation by its potentially toxic constituents; however, relatively few are available assessing phytotoxic effects under laboratory conditions. In our study, aqueous extract was prepared and used for treatment. Experiment following procedure defined No. 227 OECD Guideline Testing Chemicals: Terrestrial Plant Test. Tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants were used; elucidated toxicity assessed based morphological biochemical endpoints such as biomass, chlorophyll- a chlorophyll -b , carotenoids, protein content. Biomass reduction content showed clear dose–effect relationship; biomass decreased comparison with control (100%) all test groups (TG) at steady rate (TG1: 87.73%; TG2: 71.77%; TG3: 67.01%; TG4: 63.63%). The tendency concentrations compared to TG1: 113.61%; 148.21% 160.52%; 157.31%. However, pigments ‘Janus-faced’ effect: nutrient sample caused slight increase lower doses; actual became apparent only higher doses (chlorophyll- concentration decrease 84.47% TG4, b 77.17%, finally, carotene 83.60% TG4).

Carbon in Atmospheric Particulate Matter
Carbon compounds account for a large fraction of airborne particulate matter (‘carbonaceous aerosols’). Their presence raises a number of scientific questions dealing with climate issues and possible effects on human health. This review describes the current state of knowledge with respect to the ambient concentrations levels (elemental carbon, organic carbon and organic matter) and the various...
متن کاملa survey on tehran atmospheric polutants particulate matter & sulfur dioxide
particulate matters commonly found dispersed in the atmosphere are composed of a large variety of substances. dustfall is the usual index of particles in the size range greater than 10 m. two semi automated so2 sampling units were installed in tehran university campus (from 21 january 1973 to 22 dec. 1974) and gheitarieh area (from 23 august to 23 oct. 1974) hydrogen peroxide method was used fo...
متن کاملCharacterization of Atmospheric Particulate Matter using PIXE Technique
Coarse and fine particulate matter were collected at a residential area at Vashi, Navi Mumbai and the filter samples were analysed for trace elements using PIXE technique. The trend of particulate matter showed higher concentrations during winter than the summer and monsoon concentration levels. High concentrations of elements related to soil and sea salt were found in PM10 and PM2.5. Also high...
متن کاملEffects of Low O(2) Root Stress on Ethylene Biosynthesis in Tomato Plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv Heinz 1350).
Low O(2) conditions were obtained by flowing N(2) through the solution in which the tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv Heinz 1350) were growing. Time course experiments revealed that low O(2) treatments stimulated 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) synthase production in the roots and leaves. After the initiation of low O(2) conditions, ACC synthase activity and ACC content in ...
متن کاملProteomic analysis of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) pollen.
In flowering plants, pollen grains are produced in the anther and released to the external environment with the primary function of delivering sperm cells to the female gametophyte. This study was conducted to identify proteins in tomato pollen and to analyse their roles in relation to pollen function. Tomato is an important crop which is grown worldwide and is an excellent experimental system....
