Effects on carrion consumption in a mammalian scavenger community when dominant species are excluded

چکیده
Abstract Carrion is a valuable resource exploited not only by obligate scavengers but also wide variety of facultative scavengers. These species provide several important ecosystem services which can suffer if the scavenger community composition altered, thus reducing provided. We studied response Mediterranean to exclusion larger (red fox Vulpes vulpes , European badger Meles meles and wild boar Sus scrofa ) using an fence permeable small (mainly Egyptian mongoose Herpestes ichneumon common genet Genetta genetta stone marten Martes foina ). The dominant led significant reduction in amount carrion consumed increase available for smaller decomposers, over longer period time. Although consumption non-excluded increased inside area relative control area, it was insufficient compensate eaten Of species, significantly its main beneficiary Therefore, altering woodlands reduce efficiency carcass removal benefit other opportunistic such as mongoose, increasing them. This interaction could have substantial implications disease transmission, nutrient cycling, function.

متن کاملEffects of vulture exclusion on carrion consumption by facultative scavengers
Vultures provide an essential ecosystem service through removal of carrion, but globally, many populations are collapsing and several species are threatened with extinction. Widespread declines in vulture populations could increase the availability of carrion to other organisms, but the ways facultative scavengers might respond to this increase have not been thoroughly explored. We aimed to det...
متن کاملTrophic Facilitation or Limitation? Comparative Effects of Pumas and Black Bears on the Scavenger Community
Scavenging is a widespread behaviour and an important process influencing food webs and ecological communities. Large carnivores facilitate the movement of energy across trophic levels through the scavenging and decomposition of their killed prey, but competition with large carnivores is also likely to constrain acquisition of carrion by scavengers. We used an experimental approach based on mot...
متن کاملWhat Happens in Your Mind and Brain When You Are Excluded from a Social Activity?
In school and in everyday life, we sometimes experience rejection by classmates, or we might see someone being excluded from an activity. What do excluded individuals feel? How does the brain process information about being socially excluded? In the past few decades, psychologists and social neuroscientists have investigated the influence of social exclusion on our mind, brain, and behavior. So...
متن کاملOptimal consumption when capital markets are imperfect *
Capital market imperfections are widely believed to explain why consumption deviates from the martingale implications of the REPIH. However, empirical modelling and theoretical analysis of consumption under capital market imperfections is hindered by the absence of any tractable theoretical model. By modelling capital market imperfections as consumers facing an upward sloping interest rate sche...
