چکیده

This study investigates the predictions of real contact area for perfectly elastic rough surfaces using a boundary element method (BEM). Sample surface measurements were used in BEM to predict as function load. The normalized by root-mean-square (RMS) slope evaluate if would collapse onto one master curve. If so, this confirm that areas manufactured, measured are directly proportional root mean square and applied load, which is predicted fractal diffusion-based theory. data predicts complex response deviates from behavior. variation RMS spectrum system related features further evaluated illuminate why property seen some types not others.

Elastic Response of Rough Surfaces in Partial Contact

– We model numerically the partial normal contact of two elastic rough surfaces with highly correlated asperities. Facing surfaces are unmated and described as self-affine with a Hurst exponent H . The numerical algorithm is based on Fourier acceleration and allows efficient simulation of very large systems. The force, F , versus contact area, A, characteristics follows the law F ∼ A in accorda...

Elastic-plastic Contact of a Rough Surface with Weierstrass Profile

In this appendix, we list the expressions that characterize the response of an elastic-perfectly plastic solid with sinusoidal roughness to indentation by a rigid flat punch. The substrate is an elastic-perfectly plastic solid with Young’s modulus E, Poisson’s ratio ν and yield stress Y σ . The surface roughness has wavelength n λ and amplitude n g . In terms of these parameters, we define a ma...

Surface separation and contact resistance considering sinusoidal elastic–plastic multi-scale rough surface contact

The current work considers the multi-scale nature of surface roughness in a new model that predicts the real area of contact and surface separation as functions of load. This work is based upon a previous rough surfacemulti-scale contactmodelwhichused stackedelastic–plastic spheres tomodel themultiple scales of roughness. Instead, this work uses stacked 3D sinusoids to represent the asperities ...

The Mean-Square Slope of Ocean Surface Waves and Its Effects on Radar Backscatter

The mean-square slope (MSS) of the sea surface for upwind and crosswind is derived, based on Phillips’ equilibrium spectrum and the model herein on gravity–capillary wave spectrum. The MSS integrated from the above two spectra over high-frequency dissipation length (1 mm) fits the optical observations very well. The radar backscatter cross section (RBCS), calculated from specular reflection the...

Contact between representative rough surfaces.

A numerical analysis of mechanical frictionless contact between rough self-affine elastic manifolds was carried out. It is shown that the lower cutoff wave number in surface spectra is a key parameter controlling the representativity of the numerical model. Using this notion we demonstrate that for representative surfaces the evolution of the real contact area with load is universal and indepen...
