Emergence of assimilation or contrast effects in backward evaluative conditioning does not depend on US offset predictability

چکیده

Backward evaluative conditioning has been shown to result in assimilative effects where backward conditional stimuli (CS) acquire the valence of unconditional stimulus (US) or contrast CSs opposite US. The current experiments were designed assess whether nature varies as a function US offset predictability, manipulated by varying duration (fixed vs. variable), US-CS overlap (overlap no overlap), and presence forward CS. Experiment 1 employed only (USPleasant-CS1; USUnpleasant-CS2) whereas 2 concurrent (CS3-USPleasant-CS1; CS4-USUnpleasant-CS2). CS assimilation emerged both did not differ duration. Presence reduced conditioning, particular condition. These findings provide support for notion that evaluations predictability indicate can modulate extent effect overlap.

Verbal evaluative conditioning with undetected US presentations.

In evaluative conditioning research it has been shown that a neutral stimulus (CS) acquires the valence of a positive or negative stimulus (US) with which it is presented contingently. An experiment is reported in which it is examined whether evaluative shifts can also be observed in the complete absence of contingency-awareness. Neutral words were either followed by a briefly presented positiv...

How does not responding to appetitive stimuli cause devaluation: Evaluative conditioning or response inhibition?

In a series of 6 experiments (5 preregistered), we examined how not responding to appetitive stimuli causes devaluation. To examine this question, a go/no-go task was employed in which appetitive stimuli were consistently associated with cues to respond (go stimuli), or with cues to not respond (either no-go cues or the absence of cues; no-go stimuli). Change in evaluations of no-go stimuli was...

Reevaluating evaluative conditioning: a nonassociative explanation of conditioning effects in the visual evaluative conditioning paradigm.

In 2 studies, the authors investigated whether evaluative conditioning (EC) is an associative phenomenon. Experiment 1 compared a standard EC paradigm with nonpaired and no-treatment control conditions. EC effects were obtained only when the conditioned stimulus (CS) and unconditioned stimulus (UCS) were rated as perceptually similar. However, similar EC effects were obtained in both control gr...

Reply to Giri and Long: Freeze-mediated expansion of mangroves does not depend on whether expansion is emergence or reemergence.

Giri and Long (1) agree with our conclusion (2) that the expansion of mangroves from 1984 to 2011 near their range limit on the Atlantic coast of Florida is a threshold response to fewer days below −4 °C. However, they suggest that our conclusions would have been “substantially different” had we included one additional year of data in the analyses, that we needed more information about the hist...
