Emergent rheotaxis of shape-changing swimmers in Poiseuille flow

چکیده

A simple model for the motion of shape-changing swimmers in Poiseuille flow was recently proposed and numerically explored by Omori et al. ( J. Fluid Mech. , vol. 930, 2022, A30). These explorations hinted that a small number interacting mechanics can drive long-time behaviours this model, cast context well-studied alga Chlamydomonas its rheotactic such flows. Here, we explore analytically via multiple-scale asymptotic analysis, seeking to formally identify causal factors shape behaviour these flow. By capturing evolution Hamiltonian-like quantity, reveal origins long-term drift single swimmer-dependent constant, whose sign determines eventual swimmer. This constant captures nonlinear interaction between oscillatory speed effective hydrodynamic deforming swimmers, driving either towards or away from rheotaxis.

Shape diagram of vesicles in Poiseuille flow.

Soft bodies flowing in a channel often exhibit parachutelike shapes usually attributed to an increase of hydrodynamic constraint (viscous stress and/or confinement). We show that the presence of a fluid membrane leads to the reverse phenomenon and build a phase diagram of shapes-which are classified as bullet, croissant, and parachute-in channels of varying aspect ratio. Unexpectedly, shapes ar...

the effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...

A Numerical Study of Drop Motion in Poiseuille Flow

The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in two-dimensional Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds numbers is studied numerically. In the limit of a small Reynolds number (<1), the motion of the drop depends strongly on the ratio of the viscosity of the drop fluid to the viscosity of the suspending fluid. For a viscosity ratio 0.125, the drop moves toward the centre of the channe while for t...

Intermittency in spiral Poiseuille flow

The results of an experimental study on intermittent spiral vortices observed in a counter-rotating Taylor-Couette system with an additional axial through flow, i.e. SpiralPoiseuille flow, are presented. Convectively unstable upstream propagating spiral vortices appear in the laminar basic flow from an oscillatory instability and in general become absolutely unstable at higher inner cylinder Re...
