End-To-End Performance of an Uplink NB-IoT Transmission Relayed on a Low-Altitude UAV Platform with Non-Orthogonal Single-Carrier FDMA in the Optical Wireless Backhaul Link

A current trend in the evolution of mobile communication networks consists integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with Terrestrial ones. One option to implement NTN part this hybrid architecture using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) that relay uplink radio signals through optical wireless backhaul links. good choice for waveform is conventional SC-FDMA, which mitigates PAPR and enables a longer battery lifetime at transmitter side. For link, based on low-cost Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, non-orthogonal implementation SC-FDMA proposed. By doing so, it possible improve end-to-end throughput by reducing bandwidth (to make fit LED frequency response), mitigate effect light reflections, increase energy efficiency link. Since VLC relies non-coherent IM/DD, must rotate phase IDFT subcarriers, order obtain real-valued signal samples output. Two strategies relaying data UAV node are evaluated, namely: Detect-and-Forward Decode-and-Forward. The first one recovers modulation (i.e. partial regeneration), whereas second regenerates transmitted message up bit level (i.e., total regeneration). This paper studies combination strategy NB-IoT Modulation Coding Scheme (MCS) maximizes different altitudes.
