Ensuring Data Freshness for Blockchain-Enabled Monitoring Networks

The Age of Information (AoI) is a recently proposed metric for quantifying data freshness in real-time status monitoring systems, where timeliness importance. In this article, the problem characterizing and controlling AoI studied context blockchain-enabled networks (BeMNs). BeMN, updates from sources are transmitted recorded blockchain. To investigate statistical characteristics transmission latency consensus first rigorously modeled. Then, average AoI, violation probability, peak probability derived closed form so as to quantify performance BeMN. Furthermore, simplified it shown that quantity can capture upper or lower bounds actual probability. Simulation results show each BeMN parameters (i.e., target successful block size, timeout) have conflicting effects on AoI-related performance. Subsequently, design insights provided maintain experimental with real Hyperledger Fabric platform further validate accuracy our modeling analysis.
