Lecture 1 : Data Compression and Entropy

In this lecture, we will study a simple model for data compression. The compression algorithms will be constrained to be “lossless” meaning that there should be a corresponding decoding algorithm that recovers the original data exactly. We will study the limits of such compression, which ties to the notion of entropy. We will also study a simple algorithm for compression when the input text arr...

Epsilon Entropy of Probability Distributions

This paper summarizes recent work on the theory of epsilon entropy for probability distributions on complete separable metric spaces. The theory was conceived [3] in order to have a framework for discussing the quality of data storage and transmission systems. The concept of data source was defined in [4] as a probabilistic metric space: a complete separable metric space together with a probabi...

Epsilon-Entropy and H∞ Entropy in Continuous Time Systems

Based on the analysis of ε − entropy, information in continuous time linear multivariable stochastic systems is discussed. To describe time average information variation after a process transmitted through a continuous time system, the concept of system variety defined by the difference between ε − entropy rates of system input and output is proposed. Furthermore, an equivalent relation between...

Entropy and Compression

The concept of entropy is fundamental to information theory. In 1948, Claude Shannon introduced entropy as a measure of the amount of choice in a set of events, where only the probabilities of the events are known [3]. Entropy can be understood in many ways, such as a measure of uncertainty, or a measure of the amount of information gained when learning the outcome of a set of events. Each inte...

Compression and Entropy

The connection between text compression and the measure of entropy of a source seems to be well known but poorly documented. We try to partially remedy this situation by showing that the topological entropy is a lower bound for the compression ratio of any compressor. We show that for factorial sources the 1978 version of the Ziv-Lempel compression algorithm achieves this lower bound.
