Estimation Method of Short-Circuit Current Contribution of Inverter-Based Resources for Symmetrical Faults

This paper proposes a practical approach to estimate the symmetrical short-circuit current (SCC) levels in overcurrent protection devices (OCPDs) installed on radial feeders for any penetration level of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs). The proposed method restores lost phase coordination by estimating SCC values and changing TMS OCPDs accordingly. is validated comparing results with simulations IEEE 34-Node Test Feeder using MATLAB/Simulink, which shows an average error 1.5% maximum 3.0%. For 100% level, variation through main fault trunk (MFT) exceeds ± 10%, leading compromised coordination. flowing reversely lateral branches MFT could cause improper tripping. Higher are estimated measured impedances equal zero. restored values. study two schemes accommodate DERs injecting 1.2 pu 2.0 level. contributes improving distribution networks high DERs. findings have implications system operators planners maintain safe reliable operation feeders.
