Evaluating probabilistic forecasts of extremes using continuous ranked probability score distributions

چکیده
Verifying probabilistic forecasts for extreme events is a highly active research area because popular media and public opinions are naturally focused on events, biased conclusions readily made. In this context, classical verification methods tailored such as thresholded weighted scoring rules, have undesirable properties that cannot be mitigated, the well-known continuous ranked probability score (CRPS) no exception. paper, we define formal framework assessing behavior of forecast evaluation procedures with respect to which use demonstrate assessment based expectation proper not suitable extremes. Process Capability Analysis via Continuous Ranked Probability Score
Process capability analysis is an important aspect of quality control. Various process capability indices are proposed when the distribution is normal. For non-normal cases, percentile and yield-based indices have been introduced. These two methods use partial features of a process distribution, such as key percentiles and the proportion of non-conforming (PNC) to estimate the process capabilit...
متن کاملThe Ranked Probability Score and the Probability Score: a Comparison
In this paper, we compare the ranked probability score (RPS) and the probability score (PS) and examine the nature of the sensitivity of the RPS to distance. First, we briefly describe the nature of and the relationship between the frameworks within which the RPS and the PS were formulated. Second, we considsr certain properties of the RPS and the PS including their range, their values for cate...
متن کاملEvaluating probability forecasts for GDP declines using alternative methodologies
Evaluation methodologies for rare events from meteorology, psychology and medical diagnosis are used to examine the value of probability forecasts of real GDP declines during the current (Q0) and each of the next four quarters (Q1-Q4) using data from the Survey of Professional Forecasters. We study the quality of these probability forecasts in terms of calibration, resolution, odds ratio, the r...

Abstract: Using evaluation methodologies for rare events from meteorology and psychology, we examine the value of probability forecasts of real GDP declines during the current and each of the next four quarters using data from the Survey of Professional Forecasters. We study the quality of these probability forecasts in terms of calibration, resolution, the relative operating characteristic (RO...
متن کاملNOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Evaluating Probabilistic Forecasts Using Information Theory
The problem of assessing the quality of an operational forecasting system that produces probabilistic forecasts is addressed using information theory. A measure of the quality of the forecasting scheme, based on the amount of a data compression it allows, is outlined. This measure, called ignorance, is a logarithmic scoring rule that is a modified version of relative entropy and can be calculat...
