Evaluating tree survival and modeling initial growth for Atlantic Forest restoration

چکیده
ABSTRACT: Ecological restoration has become an important complementary practice to protect natural resources and preserve biodiversity. However, native species may be used in programs ways that do not optimize their performance. This research evaluated the survival model initial growth of 15 tree planted “filling” “diversity” lines post-planting phase a experiment subtropics Brazilian Atlantic Forest. We measured rate (%) one year after planting collar diameter (mm), total height (m), crown projection area (m²) volume (m³) first 48 months planting. Growth modeling for each variable was based on non-linear mathematical Logistic, Gompertz, Chapman-Richards models. Model selection variable/species supported by Akaike Information Criterion, standard error estimate, coefficient determination. The highest rates were reported Cordia americana, Gochnatia polymorpha, Inga uruguensis, Peltophorum dubium, Prunus sellowii e Zanthoxylum rhoifolium (91.7%) Solanum mauritianum (90.3%). with faster were, increasing order, Mimosa scabrella, Trema micrantha, Croton urucurana. With better understanding developmental potential species, it is possible increase functional diversity filling group. There no single capable describing variables analyzed different models needed describe characteristics species.

Evaluating the Success of Forest Restoration
Forest restoration projects are occurring throughout the world. Restoration projects can vary greatly depending on the type of forest and the type of stressors that have caused ecosystem degradation and the need for restoration. Because of this variability, and because objective criteria for determining the success of restoration projects are lacking, it is difficult to evaluate the overall suc...
متن کاملSurvival and growth of planted seedlings of three native tree species in urban forest restoration in Wellington, New Zealand
Planting container-grown native seedlings is a restoration technique widely used to enhance biodiversity, including in urban areas in New Zealand. We measured survival and growth of seedlings of three native tree species (Aristotelia serrata, wineberry (n = 743); Cordyline australis, cabbage tree (n = 666); and Pittosporum eugenioides, lemonwood (n = 701)) planted in 11 forest restoration sites...
متن کاملEvaluating forest growth models
Effective model evaluation is not a single, simple procedure, but comprises several interrelated steps that cannot be separated from each other or from the purpose and process of model construction. We draw attention to several statistical and graphical procedures that may assist in model calibration and evaluation, with special emphasis on those useful in forest growth modelling. We propose a ...
متن کاملLandscape Modeling for Forest Restoration: Concepts and Applications
Abstract-Restoration planning, evaluation, and implementation are of paramount importance in many areas where the magnitude of the abiotic and biotic disturbance agents has altered the resources and conditions of forest landscapes. However, the effect of restoration practices is difficult to measure, and in many areas the restoration goals are yet less clear. Landscape modeling provides useful ...
متن کاملGermination and initial growth of tree seedlings on deforested and natural forest soil at Dulhazara, Bangladesh.
The destruction of natural forest is increasing due to urbanization, industrialization, settlement and for the agricultural expansion over last few decades, and studies for their recovery need to be undertaken. With this aim, this comparative study was designed to see the effects of deforested soil on germination and growth performance of five different tree species. In the experiment, five spe...
