Examining the Kinematic Structures within which Lightning Flashes Are Initiated Using a Cloud-Resolving Model

چکیده

Abstract Lightning is frequently initiated within the convective regions of thunderstorms, and so flash rates tend to follow trends in updraft speed volume. It has been suggested that lightning production linked turbulent flow generated by updrafts as eddies organize charged hydrometeors into complex charge structures. These structures consist local increased magnitudes between which flash-initiating electric fields may be generated. How kinematics influences production, however, remains unclear. In this study, flashes produced a multicell two supercell storms simulated using The Collaborative Model for Multiscale Atmospheric Simulation (COMMAS) were examined identify kinematic they occurred. By relating thermals, expected located where rate strain rotational are equal, or eddy features. Results showed average dominated vortical patterns, similar those structures’ characterized horizontal vorticity vertical shearing. features common across all cases demonstrated along periphery produced. Careful consideration near consistent with thermals rising through storm.

Microwave radio emissions of negative cloud-to-ground lightning flashes

Article history: Received 6 August 2012 Received in revised form 31 January 2013 Accepted 6 February 2013 We report preliminary results of a new observational study of microwave-frequency electromagnetic radiation that is emitted by lightning discharge processes. Radiation was observed with a ceramic patch antenna and a digital radio receiver tuned to a center frequency of 1.63 GHz and a bandwi...

Microsecond-scale Electric Field Pulses in Cloud Lightning Flashes

From wideband electric field records acquired using a 12-bit digitizing system with a 500-ns sampling interval, microsecond-scale pulses in different stages of cloud flashes in Florida and New Mexico are analyzed. The pulse occurrence statistics and waveshape characteristics are presented, The larger pulses tend to occur early in the flash and presumably are related to the flashinitiating break...

investigating the feasibility of a proposed model for geometric design of deployable arch structures

deployable scissor type structures are composed of the so-called scissor-like elements (sles), which are connected to each other at an intermediate point through a pivotal connection and allow them to be folded into a compact bundle for storage or transport. several sles are connected to each other in order to form units with regular polygonal plan views. the sides and radii of the polygons are...

NO signatures from lightning flashes

In situ measurements of cloud properties, NO, and other trace gases were made in active thunderstorms by two research aircraft. Concurrent measurements from a three-dimensional (3-D) VHF interferometer and the 2-D National Lightning Detection Network were used to determine lightning frequency and location. The CHILL Doppler radar and the NOAA-WP-3D Orion X band Dopper radar were also used to me...

An Analysis of the Lightning Jump Algorithm Using Geostationary Lightning Mapper Flashes

This project aims to implement the two-sigma lightning jump algorithm (LJA) developed using Lightning Mapping Arrays (LMAs), with GOES-16 Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) flashes, evaluate its performance, and identify any needed adjustments to the algorithm to optimize operational skill. The GLM is projected to have lower detection efficiency (DE) (7090 percent) than operational LMAs (95-9...
