Experimental and numerical investigation into the drag performance of dimpled surfaces in a turbulent boundary layer

چکیده

Although several previous studies have reported a potential drag-reducing effect of dimpled surfaces in turbulent boundary layers, there is lack replicability across experiments performed by different research groups. To contribute to the dialogue, we scrutinize one most studied dimple geometries literature, which has diameter 20 mm and depth 0.5 mm. There no general consensus literature on drag-reduction performance this particular geometry, with some suggesting drag reduction, while others report increase. The present combined experimental numerical study comprises two sets wind tunnel well-resolved large-eddy simulation. simulation both depict total increase around 1%–2% compared flat reference case. This finding agrees recent Spalart et al. (2019). Furthermore, shed light plausible reason behind discrepancy between (2019) earlier results from van Nesselrooij (2016). Lastly, reveal that pressure main contributor surface. We believe these will new geometry.

An Experimental Investigation on the Characteristics of Turbulent Boundary Layer Flows Over a Dimpled Surface

An experimental investigation was conducted to quantify the characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer flows over a dimpled surface in comparison to those over a conventional flat plate. In addition to measuring surface pressure distributions to determine the friction factors of the test plates and to map the surface pressure inside the dimple cavity, a high-resolution digital particle ima...

Numerical investigation of the turbulent boundary layer over a bump

Large-eddy simulation (LES) has been used to calculate the flow of a statistically two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer over a bump. Subgrid-scale stresses in the filtered Navier–Stokes equations were closed using the dynamic eddy viscosity model. LES predictions for a range of grid resolutions were compared to the experimental measurements of Webster et al. (1996). Predictions of the mean ...

An Experimental Investigation of the Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layer

The compressible turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate with air injection has been investigated experimentally. Boundary-layer developments were measured at Mach numbers of 2-5 and 3"5 for the case of zero injection and each of three different injection rates, with and without heat transfer. The free stream Reynolds numbers were 5 x 10 7 per meter for a Mach number of 2.5 and 4.7 x 10 7 per ...
