Experimental Investigation on Latent Thermal Energy Storages (LTESs) Based on Pure and Copper-Foam-Loaded PCMs

In this work, a commercial paraffin PCM (RT35) characterized by change range of the solid-liquid phase transition temperature Ts−l=29–36 °C and low thermal conductivity λSL=0.2 W/m K is experimentally tested submitting it to charging/discharging cycles. The contained in case with rectangular base heated from top due electrical resistance. aim research show benefits that 95% porous copper metal foam (pore density PD=20PPI) can bring PCM-based storage system simply loading it, consequent increase effective medium (λLOAD=7.03 K). experimental results highlight positive effects presence, such as heat conduction improvement throughout system, significant reduction time for complete melting PCM. addition, data copper-foam-loaded maximum reached during heating process lower than 20K respect test pure PCM, imposing same flux on (P=3.5 W/m2).
