Exploring genomic approaches to fast-track genetic gains in breechstrike resistance in Merino sheep

چکیده
Context Breech flystrike is a costly trait to measure. Industry investment into genetic solutions for breech has resulted in the availability of estimated breeding values indicator traits, such as wrinkle, cover and dag. However, selection based on traits rather than itself, gains could be enhanced through genomic approaches. Aim This study investigated whether approaches major genes, marker-assisted selection, or values, would most efficient application information enhance resistance. Methods The analysis comprised 1535 sheep Merino Breeding Flystrike Resistance Resource flocks from New South Wales Western Australia with high density genotypes (actual imputed). A genome-wide association was conducted its namely, dag cover. also their accuracy. Key results SNP associations found this did not point existence few genes effects resistance traits. Throughout genome, small effect were found, which enabled estimation values. these low accuracy, expected size dataset. Conclusion Genomic prediction feasible tool applying technology industry. Implications reference population appropriate needs established difficult-to-measure trait, dispersed an effective option.

Genetic parameters for resistance to Haemonchus contortus in Merino sheep in South Africa.
Resistance to natural infections of Haemonchus contortus (wireworm) was studied in Merino sheep. From February 1995 to July 1996 data were collected from the OTK Merino Stud on the farm Wildebeesfontein near Hendrina in Mpumalanga province. From March 1998 to January 2000 another Merino flock at Irene in Gauteng province was included in the study. In both cases, 50 randomly-chosen animals from ...

The chicken has led the way among agricultural animal species in infectious disease control and, in particular, selection for genetic resistance. The generation of the chicken genome sequence and the availability of other empowering tools and resources greatly enhance the ability to select for enhanced disease resistance via genetic markers and to understand more deeply the biological basis of ...

متن کاملBreeding for disease resistance in Merino sheep in Australia.
Breeding for disease resistance in Merino sheep in Australia has attracted considerable research and development attention. Increased labour costs, the reduced efficacy of common anthelmintics and insecticides, consumer demand for products which are free of chemicals and the poor prognosis of alternative long-term control strategies are all forcing sheep breeders to contemplate the best animal ...
