Extensive Lensing Survey of Optical and Near-infrared Dark Objects (El Sonido): HST H-faint Galaxies behind 101 Lensing Clusters

چکیده

We present a Spitzer/IRAC survey of H-faint ($H_{160} \gtrsim 26.4$, $<5\sigma$) sources in 101 lensing cluster fields. Across CANDELS/Wide-like area $\sim$648 arcmin$^2$ (effectively $\sim$221 the source plane), we have securely discovered 53 IRAC Channel-2 band (CH2, 4.5 $\mathrm{\mu m}$; median CH2$=22.46\pm0.11$ AB mag) that lack robust HST/WFC3-IR F160W counterparts. The most remarkable our sample, namely ES-009 field Abell 2813, is brightest galaxy at m}$ known so far ($\mathrm{CH2}=20.48\pm0.03$ mag). show sample are massive (median $M_\mathrm{star} = 10^{10.3\pm 0.3}$ $M_\odot$), star-forming star formation rate $=100_{-40}^{+60}$ $M_\odot$yr$^{-1}$) and dust-obscured ($A_V=2.6\pm0.3$) galaxies around photometric redshift $z=3.9\pm0.4$. stellar continua 14 can be resolved CH2 band, suggesting circularized effective radius ($R_\mathrm{e,circ}$; corrected) $1.9\pm0.2$ kpc $<1.5$ for whole samples, respectively. This consistent with sizes unobscured $z\sim4$, indicating represent dusty tail distribution wider population. Comparing ALMA dust continuum similar reported previously, conclude heavy obscuration related to compactness both ($R_\mathrm{e,circ}\sim 1$ kpc). These make up $16_{-7}^{+13}$% mass range $10^{10}-10^{11.2}$ $M_\odot$ $z=3\sim5$, contributing $8_{-4}^{+8}$% cosmic density this epoch likely tracing early phase formation.

Galaxies behind Lensing Clusters: Contrast with Field Search Results

We conduct a search for z & 7 dropout galaxies behind 11 massive lensing clusters using 21 arcmin of deep HST NICMOS, ACS, and WFPC2 image data. In total, over this entire area, we find only one robust z ∼ 7 z-dropout candidate (previously reported around Abell 1689). Four less robust zdropout and J-dropout candidates are also found. The nature of the four weaker candidates could not be precise...

Weak Gravitational Lensing around Field Galaxies in HST Survey Images

Using data from the HST Medium Deep Survey, a long-term Key Project, together with generically similar archived data, we have discovered evidence for weak gravitational ‘shear’ of background field galaxies (I = 22 – 26) in the vicinity of isolated, foreground galaxies ( I = 15 – 22), especially those of early type. The statistical lensing is demonstrated by the slight preferential orientation o...

EROs found behind lensing clusters

Aims. We study the properties and nature of extremely red galaxies (ERO, R−K ≥5.6) found behind two lensing clusters and compare them with other known galaxy populations. Methods. New HST/ACS observations, Spitzer IRAC and MIPS, and Chandra/ACIS observations of the two lensing clusters Abell 1835 and AC114 contemplate our earlier optical and near-IR observations (Richard et al. 2006) and have b...

Lensing galaxies : light or dark ?

In a recent paper, Hawkins (1997) argues on the basis of statistical studies of double-image gravitational lenses and lens candidates that a large population of dark lenses exists and that these outnumber galaxies with more normal mass-to-light ratios by a factor of 3:1. If correct, this is a very important result for many areas of astronomy including galaxy formation and cosmology. In this pap...

Gravitational Lensing by Nearby Clusters of Galaxies

We present an estimation of the expected number of arcs and arclets in a sample of nearby (z < 0.1) clusters of galaxies, that takes into account the magnitude limit of the Visiting Astronomer at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. CTIO is operated by AURA, Inc. under contract to the National Science Foundation.
