Factors Affecting Spatiotemporal Variation in Survival of Endangered Winter‐Run Chinook Salmon Out‐migrating from the Sacramento River

چکیده
Among four extant and declining runs of Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in California’s Central Valley, none has declined as precipitously the Sacramento River winter run. Migratory winter-run employ a life history strategy to reside feed stopover habitats on their way from freshwaters ocean. run, ocean, that have been affected by anthropogenic disturbance. Using acoustic telemetry, we examined conditions influenced reach-specific movement survival out-migrating juveniles during prolonged, multi-year drought 2013 2016, followed one wettest years record (2017). We modeled how time-varying individual riverine covariates habitat features smolt survival. Model selection favored model with mean annual flow, intra-annual deviations flow at reach scale, channel characteristics, travel time. Mean had strongest positive effect A negative interaction between indicated within-year scale larger effects low-flow years. These factors resulted higher pulse flows or high flows. Fish exhibited density-dependent behavior, slowed downstream migration river wet extending most critically dry year. This paper contributes two key findings for natural resource managers interested management targeted restoration. The first is new insight into magnitude affects fish. second density dependence influences where used. Despite this, identified an area fish consistently all

Modeling the Survival of Chinook Salmon Smolts Outmigrating Through the Lower Sacramento River System
To study the factors associated with the freshwater mortality of outmigrating chinook salmon, releases of tagged juvenile salmon were made at multiple locations in the Sacramento River each spring between the years 1979 and 1995. A midwater trawl located downstream of the release sites caught salmon soon after release and, 1 to 4 years later, samples taken from the catches of marine fisheries r...
متن کاملMajor histocompatibility complex differentiation in Sacramento River chinook salmon.
The chinook salmon of the Sacramento River, California, have been reduced to a fraction of their former abundance because of human impact and use of the river system. Here we examine the genetic variation at a major histocompatibility complex class II exon in the four Sacramento chinook salmon runs. Examination of the alleles found in these and other chinook salmon revealed nucleotide patterns ...

Pumping at the water export facilities in the southern Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta kills fish at and near the associated fish-salvage facilities. Correlative analyses of salvage counts with population indices have failed to provide quantitative estimates of the magnitude of this mortality. I estimated the proportional losses of Sacramento River Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and del...

—We evaluated 25 inland populations of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in the Snake River with 13 microsatellite loci to test for contemporary genetic differentiation at three scales: between life history types, among regions within life history types, and among populations within regions. The genetic distance and diversity of natural Chinook salmon populations were also contrasted with...
