Finite differencing second order systems describing black hole spacetimes

1550-7998=20 Keeping Einstein’s equations in second order form can be appealing for computational efficiency, because of the reduced number of variables and constraints. Stability issues emerge, however, which are not present in first order formulations. We show that a standard discretization of the second order ‘‘shifted’’ wave equation leads to an unstable semidiscrete scheme if the shift par...

Reducing phase error in long numerical binary black hole evolutions with sixth order finite differencing

We describe a modification of a fourth-order accurate “moving puncture” evolution code, where by replacing spatial fourth-order accurate differencing operators in the bulk of the grid by a specific choice of sixth-order accurate stencils we gain significant improvements in accuracy. We illustrate the performance of the modified algorithm with an equal-mass simulation covering nine orbits. PACS ...

Second Order Scalar Invariants of the Riemann Tensor: Applications to Black Hole Spacetimes

We discuss the Kretschmann, Chern-Pontryagin and Euler invariants among the second order scalar invariants of the Riemann tensor in any spacetime in the Newman-Penrose formalism and in the framework of gravitoelectromagnetism, using the Kerr-Newman geometry as an example. An analogy with electromagnetic invariants leads to the definition of regions of gravitoelectric or gravitomagnetic dominance.

Are Higher Order Membranes stable in Black Hole Spacetimes?

We continue the study of the existence and stability of static spherical membrane con gurations in curved spacetimes. We rst consider higher order membranes described by a Lagrangian which, besides the Dirac term, includes a term proportional to the scalar curvature of the world{volume (3)R. Notably, in this case, the equations of motion can be reduced to second order ones and an e ective poten...

Causal differencing of flux-conservative equations applied to black hole spacetimes

The apparent horizon boundary condition (AHBC) appears to be one of the fundamental techniques required for evolving black hole spacetimes using numerical techniques. In this paper, we present work on an AHBC in the context of the recently formulated Bona-Massó (BM) hyperbolic system for the Einstein Evolution equations, however in doing so, we present a technique which is generally causally co...
