Fluid Overpressurization of Rock Fractures: Experimental Investigation and Analytical Modeling

نویسندگان

چکیده

Fluid-induced seismicity in tectonically inactive regions has been attributed to fluid overpressurization of rock fractures during natural resource extraction and storage. We conducted a series triaxial shear-flow experiments on sawcut granite showed that the fracture responses can be dissimilar under various pressurization conditions. For pressure-controlled pressurization, uniform pressure distribution promoted by lowering rate enhancing permeability. However, volume-controlled high causes drastic increase before failure. In this case, our analytical model reveals area normal stiffness also influence variations. The maximum seismic moment predicted is well validated experimental data for cases with low rates. discrepancy between increases higher overpressure ratio owing assumption model. sensitivity analysis demonstrates importance size estimation prediction. Our potentially applied control mitigate risks fluid-induced seismicity.

Fluid Flow Modeling in Fractures

In this paper we study fluid flow in fractures using numerical simulation and address the challenging issue of hydraulic property characterization in fractures. The methodology is based on Computational Fluid Dynamics, using a finite-volume based discretization scheme. Steady-state, viscous, laminar flow simulations for a Newtonian fluid are carried out in both 2D and 3D fracture models. In 2D,...

Effective Conductivity Modeling of a Fluid Saturated Porous Rock

The microstructure of a porous medium and physical characteristics of the solid and the fluids that occupy the pore space determine the macroscopic transport properties of the medium. The computation of macroscopic properties from the rock microtomography is becoming an increasingly studied topic. The transport properties are especially difficult to determine at the microscopic scale. In this p...

An Experimental and Analytical Investigation of Rectangular Synthetic Jets

In this paper the flow field of a rectangular synthetic jet driven by a piezoelectric membrane issuing into a quiescent environment is studied. The similarities exhibited by synthetic and continuous turbulent jets lead to the hypothesis that a rectangular synthetic jet within a limited region downstream of the orifice be modeled using similarity analysis just as a continuous planar jet. Accordi...
