Forecasting Equatorial Ionospheric Convective Instability With ICON Satellite Measurements

چکیده
Measurements from the Ionospheric Connections Explorer satellite (ICON) form basis of direct numerical forecast simulations plasma convective instability in postsunset equatorial F region ionosphere. ICON data are selected and used to initialize force then test results one orbit later when revisits same longitude. Data IVM density drifts instrument MIGHTI red-line thermospheric winds simulation. also for irregularities (electrically polarized depletions). Fourteen datasets late March 2022, were examined. The correctly predicted occurrence or non-occurrence 12 times while producing false positive negative. This demonstrates that important telltales present state variables mechanisms irregularity formation captured by simulation code. Possible refinements strategy discussed.

Improved horizontal wind model HWM07 enables estimation of equatorial ionospheric electric fields from satellite magnetic measurements
[1] Horizontal neutral winds play an important role in lowlatitude ionospheric E and F-region dynamics. In particular, the zonal winds have strong effects on the local structure of the low-latitude ionospheric current system. Accurate wind specification is therefore essential for modeling these currents. In order to investigate the retrieval of eastward electric fields from satellite-derived eq...
متن کاملMidday reversal of equatorial ionospheric electric ®eld
A comparative study of the geomagnetic and ionospheric data at equatorial and low-latitude stations in India over the 20 year period 1956±1975 is described. The reversal of the electric ®eld in the ionosphere over the magnetic equator during the midday hours indicated by the disappearance of the equatorial sporadic E region echoes on the ionograms is a rare phenomenon occurring on about 1% of t...

متن کاملBarotropic Instability and Equatorial Superrotation
Baroclinically unstable zones in midlatitudes normally produce medium-scale planetary waves that propagate toward the equator where they generate easterlies while transferring westerly momentum poleward, so that the jet lies in higher latitudes than in the corresponding axisymmetric (eddy-free) state. When the baroclinically unstable zone is moved into low latitudes, however, the equatorward si...
متن کاملLongitudinal differences of ionospheric vertical density distribution and equatorial electrodynamics
[1] Accurate estimation of global vertical distribution of ionospheric and plasmaspheric density as a function of local time, season, and magnetic activity is required to improve the operation of space-based navigation and communication systems. The vertical density distribution, especially at low and equatorial latitudes, is governed by the equatorial electrodynamics that produces a vertical d...
