Forest hoverfly community collapse: Abundance and species richness drop over four decades

چکیده
To study insect decline, an important threat to biodiversity, long-term datasets are needed. Here we present a of hoverfly (Diptera: Syrphidae) abundance and diversity in Dutch forest, surrounded by other forests, analyse the variation numbers over four decades. Between 1982 2021, decreased 80%. Until 1990, showed strong decrease 10.9% per year, mainly nationally rare species with carnivorous larvae exposed air. From stabilised, whereas from 2000, second period decline 9.0% year occurred, very common species. Species richness also declined strongly between 1979 2021: total number observed five monitoring days dropped 44% those 43 years. The characteristic set dry-forest disappeared at site 19 9 early on, (1979–1984) that coincided intense nitrogen input acidification caused agriculture same region. more recent is likely factors outside as forest management conditions remained constant. Continued influx nutrients pesticides regional level, well climate change possible causes decline. Research needed quantify their relative effects.

Species richness and relative abundance of birds in natural and anthropogenic fragments of Brazilian Atlantic forest
Bird communities were studied in two types of fragmented habitat of Atlantic forest in the State of Paraná, southern Brazil; one consisted of forest fragments that were created as a result of human activities (forest remnants), the other consisted of a set of naturally occurring forest fragments (forest patches). Using quantitative data obtained by the point counts method in 3 forest patches an...

متن کاملAssociations of forest cover, fragment area, and connectivity with neotropical understory bird species richness and abundance.
Theoretical and empirical studies demonstrate that the total amount of forest and the size and connectivity of fragments have nonlinear effects on species survival. We tested how habitat amount and configuration affect understory bird species richness and abundance. We used mist nets (almost 34,000 net hours) to sample birds in 53 Atlantic Forest fragments in southeastern Brazil. Fragments were...
متن کاملSpecies Richness and Productive Forest Management 1
There are many reasons to preserve the biological diversity of the earth, and perhaps the most compelling is the insurance that it provides for the uncertain times ahead. The responsibility for maintaining this biodiversity falls particularly heavily on the custodians of the tropical forests, where species richness is highest. How can these forests provide for the immediate needs of local inhab...
متن کاملSpecies richness and abundance of forest birds in relation to radiation at Chernobyl.
The effects of low-level radiation on the abundance of animals are poorly known, as are the effects on ecosystems and their functioning. Recent conclusions from the UN Chernobyl forum and reports in the popular media concerning the effects of radiation from Chernobyl on animals have left the impression that the Chernobyl exclusion zone is a thriving ecosystem, filled with an increasing number o...
