Ultraviolet Inactivation of Chloroplast Formation in Synchronously Dividing Euglena Gracilis.
Ultraviolet inactivation of chloroplast formation was studied in synchronously dividing cultures of Euglena gracilis. Sensitivity to sublethal doses given at intervals throughout the cell cycle was greater just before cell division than during division. There was approximately a twofold difference in the doseresponse relationships for the periods of high and low sensitivity.
متن کاملThe Mitochondrion of Euglena gracilis.
In the presence of oxygen, Euglena gracilis mitochondria function much like mammalian mitochondria. Under anaerobiosis, E. gracilis mitochondria perform a malonyl-CoA independent synthesis of fatty acids leading to accumulation of wax esters, which serve as the sink for electrons stemming from glycolytic ATP synthesis and pyruvate oxidation. Some components (enzymes and cofactors) of Euglena's ...
متن کاملDictyosome Structure in Euglena Gracilis
Dictyosomes are active in the segregation and/or synthesis of material for export from the cell (11). Product destined for export accumulates in vesicles attached to the cisternal tubules (12). These secretory vesicles may contain a variety of products, depending upon their immediate role in cellular metabolism. This heterogeneity is reflected in the appearance of the secretory vesicles and in ...
متن کاملLipid Metabolism of Euglena Gracilis.
In both plants and animals pathways exist for the conversion of oleic acid to polyenoic acids (1, 2), but these pathways lead to different end products in the two kingdoms. In green plants the double bond system is extended toward the methyl end of the molecule to form linoleic and linolenic acids (9,12, lBoctadecatrienoic acid) (1,3,4). The ciliated protozoa, the amoebae, and some other animal...
متن کاملChloroplast.Free Preparation from Euglena gracilis'
A bstract. A supernatant fraction, free of plstids, was prepared by centrifugation from Euglena gracilis and used to ascertain whether or not the inhibition of carbon dioxide fixation by oxygen, known as the Warburg effect, is entirely independent of the light-driven phase of photosyn-thesis. This fraction exhibited in the dark the main features of the Werburg effect; namely, an inverse relatio...
