چکیده
Optical nonlinearities are known to coherently couple amplitude and phase of light, which can result in the formation periodic waveforms. Such waveforms referred as optical frequency combs. Here we show that Bloch gain---a nonclassical phenomenon was first predicted 1930s---can play an essential role comb formation. We develop a self-consistent theoretical model considers all aspects dynamics: band structure, electron transport, cavity dynamics. In quantum cascade lasers, gain gives rise giant Kerr nonlinearity, enables modulated combs serves physical origin linewidth enhancement factor. also triggers solitonlike structures ring resonators, paving way toward electrically driven

High spectral purity Kerr frequency comb radio frequency photonic oscillator
Femtosecond laser-based generation of radio frequency signals has produced astonishing improvements in achievable spectral purity, one of the basic features characterizing the performance of an radio frequency oscillator. Kerr frequency combs hold promise for transforming these lab-scale oscillators to chip-scale level. In this work we demonstrate a miniature 10 GHz radio frequency photonic osc...
متن کاملRaman-induced Kerr-effect dual-comb spectroscopy.
We report on the first (to our knowledge) demonstration of nonlinear dual-frequency-comb spectroscopy. In multi-heterodyne femtosecond Raman-induced Kerr-effect spectroscopy, the Raman gain resulting from the coherent excitation of molecular vibrations by a spectrally narrow pump is imprinted onto the femtosecond laser frequency comb probe spectrum. The birefringence signal induced by the nonli...
متن کاملGiant Kerr nonlinearity and low-power gigahertz solitons via plasmon-induced transparency
We propose a method to enhance Kerr nonlinearity and realize low-power gigahertz solitons via plasmon-induced transparency (PIT) in a new type of metamaterial, which is constructed by an array of unit cell consisting of a cut-wire and a pair of varactor-loaded split-ring resonators. We show that the PIT in such metamaterial can not only mimic the electromagnetically induced transparency in cohe...
متن کاملCompetition between Raman and Kerr effects in microresonator comb generation.
We investigate the effects of Raman and Kerr gain in crystalline microresonators and determine the conditions required to generate mode-locked frequency combs. We show theoretically that a strong, narrowband Raman gain determines a maximum microresonator size allowable to achieve comb formation. We verify this condition experimentally in diamond and silicon microresonators and show that there e...
