Functional and historical drivers of leaf shape evolution in Palms (Arecaceae)

چکیده
Aim Leaves display a remarkable variety of shapes, each with potential ecological advantages in specific climates. While the relations between leaf shape and either climate or height have been relatively well studied eudicots, macroecological drivers remain poorly known monocots. Here, we investigated associations plant evolution clade high species morphological diversity. Location Global. Time period Cretaceous to contemporary. Major taxa Palms (Arecaceae). Methods We apply Bayesian phylogenetic mixed model test for (all – entire-leaved, pinnate-dissected, palmate-dissected costapalmate). further reconstruct ancestral using multistate speciation extinction models compare frequency shapes global temperatures through time. Results find that associates dissected leaves annual precipitation pinnate shapes. The is unclear, but early diversification was dominated by pinnate-dissected palms, which has remained most species-rich form throughout palm history. Main Conclusions are tall live humid regions more likely leaves. Through geological time scales, temperature did not play an obvious role determining This study contributes our understanding how diversity linked biological climatic factors.

The evolution and functional significance of leaf shape in’the angiosperms
Angiosperm leavesmanifest a remarkable diversity of shapes that range fromdevelopmental sequenceswithin a shoot and within crown response to microenvironment to variation among species within and between communities and among orders or families. It is generally assumed that because photosynthetic leaves are critical to plant growth and survival, variation in their shape reflects natural selecti...
متن کاملConvergent Evolution towards High Net Carbon Gain Efficiency Contributes to the Shade Tolerance of Palms (Arecaceae)
Most palm species occur in the shaded lower strata of tropical rain forests, but how their traits relate to shade adaptation is poorly understood. We hypothesized that palms are adapted to the shade of their native habitats by convergent evolution towards high net carbon gain efficiency (CGEn), which is given by the maximum photosynthetic rate to dark respiration rate ratio. Leaf mass per area,...
متن کاملModelling Leaf Shape Evolution
Background and Motivation. The foundations of evolution and population genetics respectively can be found in studies at the level of the organism. Such models will virtually always focus on intrinsically discrete features/characters such as nucleotides or the absence-presence of a character capturing a continuous feature. However, this precludes a large class of characters that are of major int...

15 صفحه اولGeographical ecology of the palms (Arecaceae): determinants of diversity and distributions across spatial scales.
BACKGROUND The palm family occurs in all tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world. Palms are of high ecological and economical importance, and display complex spatial patterns of species distributions and diversity. SCOPE This review summarizes empirical evidence for factors that determine palm species distributions, community composition and species richness such as the abiotic environ...
