Fundamental Limits on Substructure Dielectric Resonator Antennas

We show theoretically that the characteristic modes of dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) must be capacitive in low frequency limit and as a consequence this constraint Poincaré Separation Theorem, any DRA consisting partial elements an encompassing super-structure with same spatial material properties cannot resonate at lower than structure. Thus, design techniques relying on complex sub-structures to miniaturize antenna, including topology optimization meandered windings, apply DRAs. Due nature modes, it is also shown Q factor sub-structure will bounded from below by frequencies first self-resonance super-structure. demonstrate these bounding relations numerical examples.
