Fungal community dynamics associated with harmful cyanobacterial blooms in two Great Lakes

چکیده

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) impose major costs on aquatic ecosystems worldwide, including the Laurentian Great Lakes. Microbial consumers, fungi, can have important interactions with bloom-forming algae and cyanobacteria, although relatively few studies investigated relationship between fungi HABs. We examined changes in fungal community coincident occurrence of large cyanobacterial two areas Lakes (western Lake Erie Saginaw Bay, Huron). collected water samples over course bloom development, peak, decline from 3 sites western 11 dates 2 Bay 4 dates. Single molecule sequencing (PacBio RS II) molecular markers (the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA locus using fungal-specific primers 18S targeting early-diverging lineages fungi) was used to estimate composition. Results indicate a diverse within lakes, several phyla. The Chytridiomycota were particularly well-represented (54.8% 45.4% ITS sequences, respectively), we also found representation both Cryptomycota Aphelidiomycota, which are putatively obligate intracellular parasites. Further, associations (alpha diversity; composition) measures magnitude (chlorophyll a, phycocyanin, microcystin concentrations) Erie. Our results suggest potentially spatial temporal heterogeneity that motivates further research functional importance consequences for HABs freshwater more broadly.

Monitoring of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms

Nowcasting of harmful algal blooms is important both for the public and for environmental management purposes. In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, are regular phenomena but the past years intense and widespread blooms have caused major environmental concern due to its nuisance, increased nitrogen input and toxicity. One of the most abundant species Nodularia sp. c...

Controlling cyanobacterial harmful blooms in freshwater ecosystems

Cyanobacteria's long evolutionary history has enabled them to adapt to geochemical and climatic changes, and more recent human and climatic modifications of aquatic ecosystems, including nutrient over-enrichment, hydrologic modifications, and global warming. Harmful (toxic, hypoxia-generating, food web altering) cyanobacterial bloom (CyanoHAB) genera are controlled by the synergistic effects of...

Fungal Parasitism: Life Cycle, Dynamics and Impact on Cyanobacterial Blooms

Many species of phytoplankton are susceptible to parasitism by fungi from the phylum Chytridiomycota (i.e. chytrids). However, few studies have reported the effects of fungal parasites on filamentous cyanobacterial blooms. To investigate the missing components of bloom ecosystems, we examined an entire field bloom of the cyanobacterium Anabaena macrospora for evidence of chytrid infection in a ...

cyanobacterial blooms and their toxicity in vojvodina lakes, serbia

the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a significant indicator of water quality, having in mind that several genera have the quality of producing cyanotoxins, which are harmful to animals, plants and humans. seven lakes in vojvodina (republic of serbia) were examined in may and september 2007 for cyanobacterial presence and cyanotoxins content, chl a concentration and index of phosph...
